Produced by Dell, the first XPS 15, a 15.6” Ultrabook, was released in October 2010. Trademarked by Intel, Ultrabooks refer to high end notebooks that are lightweight, without compromising battery life.
Compared to the XPS 14, the XPS 15 offers slightly better internals and a larger FHD screen at 15.6 inches. However, it was not until 2013 that Dell made improvements to the XPS 15 to make it a feasible choice for more power draining tasks.
The XPS 15 posed serious competition to the Apple MacBook Pro 15 with its 9530 version that had a QHD + IGZO panel offering low response times and good coverage of the RGB and Adobe RGB color spaces—ideal specs for photo and video-editing on the go. In addition, this was the first XPS notebook to use the 37 W Intel Core i7-4700HQ Haswell processor that offered much better performance and thermal headroom than the ULV CPUs in the XPS 13 range.
In 2016, Dell upgraded its XPS 15 lineup to feature support for Intel’s Skylake processors, the Core i5-6300HQ and the Core i7-6700HQ). Then, in 2018, Dell introduced a 2-in-1 laptop into the XPS 15 series, the XPS 15 9575. Although the 9575 offered commendable specs such as the Intel Kaby Lake-G MCM, and which had offered excellent CPU and GPU performance, it was not very well received with consumers. Later in 2018, Dell released a conventional notebook— the XPS 15 9570. It included upgrades to the 8th generation Intel Coffee Lake chips (Core i5-8300H, Core i7-8750H) and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti MaxQ . A major improvement included full speed (PCIe 3.0 x4) Thunderbolt 3 ports.
