Computer will not turn on

The laptop will not respond or power on.

Charging Cord

Check to see if the adapter is plugged into a working outlet and in the correct computer jack. If the cord is properly plugged, but the light of the adapter is not on, you may consider purchasing a new charger.

Faulty Battery

If the computer will only work when the charger is plugged in then there is a problem with your battery. The battery may be faulty, so consider replacing the faulty battery. To replace the battery use the Dell Latitude E6510 Battery Replacement guide.

Audio Unavailable

Sound will not project from the laptop.

Faulty Sound Driver

You could have the wrong driver installed on your laptop. To test this, unplug your headphones and try playing some music or something. If your speakers work, disregard this section and continue to the section titled “Headphone jack will not work”. First, click this link: https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/... then find the blue text that says IDT 92HDxxx HD Audio Driver and click the download button to the right of the text. It will download and install an updated driver for your audio card on your laptop and you should be back in business.

Sound Card/Adapter

If the sound settings are correct and the latest update for windows is installed, check that the sound card is correctly functioning. Click "Start," "Control Panel," "Administrative Tools," "Computer Management," "Device Manager," expand "Sound, Video and Game Controllers," and look for your video card. Right click on it and select "Properties." It should say it is functioning properly in the dialog box if not enable if the option is available. Next, download and install all the latest driver downloads for your sound card.

If the problem still occurs, visit https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-t...

Loose Headphone Jack

Ensure that the sound settings are correct and the mute setting is off. Test audio aloud through speakers. If the problem only exists when playing through the headphones, the headphones or audio jack may be broken.

Overheating

The laptop will shut off at random without warning.

Abundance of Dust in Fans or Vents

Dust is the most typical way for a laptop to overheat. Use a compressed air duster to carefully blow the dust off the vents and fans.

Your laptop could also be getting hot but not overheating. When using your laptop, work on a hard flat surface and do not put your laptop on cloth.

For more info on how to prevent overheating check out this link: https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/...

Loud Fan Noise

If there is a constant loud fast spinning noise coming from the fan in the laptop, then download and update the BIOS with the latest available version. Run a systems check to see if the diagnostics are running properly.

Failure to Read CD’s and DVD’s

Fails to read any DVD or CD’s.

Dust In Disk Reader

Once you have checked the disk has been inserted properly. Check if there appears to be a lot of dust in the drive or on the disk, use WD40 or wipe it off. Once it has been cleaned reinsert the disk.

Broken Optical Drive

Be sure the disk has been inserted in the laptop correctly. Try to access the contents of the disc using My Computer or File Explorer. Next, try to boot from the Dell Resource DVD to verify that the issue is with the drive and not the disc itself. If the issue still occurs the optical drive may have been damaged and needs to be replaced.

Loud Fan

Fan is making a lot of noise.

Overheating

The computer is physically hot to the touch and the fan sounds as if it is running overtime. Shutdown all applications that are open, turn off your computer and let it rest until cool. Turn the computer back on and just let it run without opening any applications. If the computer heats up again, this could be a sign you have a problem with your fan.

Heat Sink Replacement

Faulty fan

Fan makes a lot of noise when the computer is running, but no heat is associated. Let the computer shutdown and restart to see if the fan begins making excess noise again. Loud/noisy fans are signs that your fan has issues and could need replacing. Make sure there is nothing caught in the fan vents causing a noise to be created.

Cursor Moving Without Interaction

Cursor is floating without you touching the device.

Delayed Cursor

The cursor on the screen is lagging or floating around. Make sure nothing is putting any pressure on the touchpad that could cause confusion. Try turning off and then on your computer to see if the cursor reconnects to the touchpad sensor. Check if there is a cursor speed listed in your computer settings that may have been changed.

Moving Cursor

The cursor on the screen is moving without being prompted by either the touchpad or the center keyboard pointer button. Clean all dust out of the keyboard that could potentially cause interference with the pointer button sensor. If problems persist, try disabling the pointer button. To disable the pointer button click start, control panel, mouse, select the touchpad image, device select, then an option to disable the pointer button.

Not Enough Storage

Error messages when trying to download applications.

Hard Drive Not Large Enough

When you’re trying to download new applications or update software, an error message of "not enough disk space" might appear. The simplest solutions include performing a disk cleanup and transferring large data files such as pictures or videos to another storage device.

Hard Drive Replacement

Computer Running Slow

Computer taking a long time to load.

Too Many Applications Open at the Same Time

This problem generally solves itself if you give the computer time to finish running the programs its running, but if it persists try Ctrl+Alt+delete, select task manager, finding programs that are running that aren't essential or are currently being used, and ending those tasks using the end task button.

Not Enough RAM

If you need to run a lot of programs simultaneously and your computer is running slow, try running fewer programs at the same time. If you need all the programs running at the same time the best solution is upgrading your RAM storage, either by adding more RAM drives or upgrading your current RAM drive.

RAM Replacement

CDs and DVDs Won’t Play

Computer can’t register the CD/DVD that was entered.

Damaged CD/DVD

Try wiping the CD or DVD disk with a soft cloth to clean off any dust and try again. If the problem persists the CD or DVD disk could be damaged beyond any chance of being read by the computer's disk reader.

Dust in CD Port

Open the port to see if there are any large objects that may have gotten caught or wedged in the port. If no objects seem to be stuck, use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust that may be in the port causing the sensor to not be able to read the disk. After doing this, reinsert the disk and allow the computer to process the disk.

Screen Is Unresponsive

Your computer is on however the screen is not.

Damaged Screen

Performance issues may occur if there are any symptoms of screen damage. Some problems may include flickering, or horizontal or vertical display lines. Damages could include cracks, chips, or scratches to the screen elements. For screen trouble shooting

see guidelines here

Unresponsive Touch Screen Sensor

Your computer does not respond to stimulus from the screen. This could be caused by a faulty screen, video card (GPU), or video settings on your laptop. Try plugging in to an external source or T.V. to test if the screen on the laptop is the issue. Running hardware diagnostics can help you identify related issues and other troubleshooting steps to resolve this. [See screen replacement guide here.]

Broken Keyboard

Your keyboard does not work.

Keys Do Not Respond

The keys could be wet, or electrically not connected well. Faulty sensors could inhibit the signal sent from the key board to the motherboard when keys are depressed. If the circuit is not completed in a computer the signal can not be sent. For keyboard troubleshooting See guidelines here

Sticky Keys

When the keys are depressed, they could fail to retract to their upward resting position. Failure to maintain and clean the keyboard can result in sticking keys. It is important to always keep food or drink away from the computer while in use. Regular cleanliness can improve the life and functionality of the keyboard and device as a whole.

Missing Keys

When keys are missing just exchange them. [See keyboard replacement guide here.]
