Overheating

The laptop becomes very hot, causing performance issues or a restart.

Lack of proper ventilation

Put the laptop on a flat, hard surface to disperse the heat more efficiently. Do not obstruct the exhaust port while the laptop is powered on.

Use a laptop cooling pad

If your laptop continues to overheat, consider buying an external cooling pad.

Poor Wi-Fi Connection

The device does not hold a strong wireless connection.

You are too far away from the wireless router

Move closer to the wireless router. Wireless signals degrade for every obstruction they pass through.

The wireless network drivers are out of date

Ensure all new updates are installed. Go to the task manager and search for "Wi-Fi drivers." Click "update."

If this doesn’t work, a complete uninstall /reinstall of the Wi-Fi drivers may be required.

Bad Boot

The laptop does not boot after displaying the HP logo.

Corrupt Windows install

Restart your computer while rapidly pressing the ESC key to enter the BIOS startup menu. Press F2 to enter hardware diagnostics. Select the appropriate language if prompted. Select “Component Tests," then "Storage," then "Extensive Test". If it passes the test, return to the startup menu and press F11 to perform a system recovery.

WARNING: The system recovery will wipe the laptop of all personal data.

Broken storage device

If the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics storage test fails, it means the the eMMC storage chip is defective. Use this video guide to replace the chip.

Blank Screen

The computer starts normally, but the monitor screen remains black.

The computer needs to be reset

Power the computer off. Remove any devices and media cards. Disconnect the power and remove the battery. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds. Plug the power cord in but do not replace the battery. Turn the power back on.

The BIOS needs to be restored

Press the power button to turn off the computer. Plug it in. Press and hold the Windows and “B” keys. Hold the power button for one second and release. Wait 40 seconds for the BIOS update to begin.

The LCD is faulty

Use an HDMI cable to connect an external monitor. Press F4 to switch between screens. If the external monitor works, visit the HP driver update website and download any new LCD drivers. If new drivers still do not solve the problem, you may need to replace the screen.

Frozen Screen

The monitor screen appears normal, but the cursor is stuck in busy mode or is unresponsive to mouse and keyboard inputs.

Too many programs are running

Open the Task Manager by pressing the Ctrl, Shift, and Esc keys simultaneously. The Task Manager will list the programs currently running and which ones are not responding. Tab to the non-responding programs and close them.

The keyboard will not wake the computer

Open the device manager and choose the keyboard tab. Select the box to enable the keyboard to wake the device.

Drivers need to be updated

Search for and install any available updates.
