The Keyboard is Unresponsive

When typing on the keyboard, the keys stick down.

Debris under Keys

If certain keys do not respond, there may be debris, such as dust, underneath them. To clean under the faulty key, carefully remove the keycaps with a flathead screwdriver or similar tool. Use a compressed air bottle to blow out the debris before sticking the keycap back into place. To clean the entire keyboard at once, please click here to view our guide on how to take off the keyboard. Then use the compressed air bottle to blow out the debris underneath the entire keyboard.

Filter Keys Accessibility is on

Filter Keys is a Windows accessibility function that tells the keyboard to ignore brief or repeated keystrokes, in order to make typing easier for users with hand tremors. This function may have accidentally been turned on, which can make it seem like your keystrokes are not being registered. To turn it off, hold the right shift button for eight seconds, or disable it from the access center in the Windows control panel.

Loose and/or Damaged Connection between the Keyboard and the Motherboard

A faulty connection between the keyboard and motherboard can render the keyboard useless. If the connection is faulty, you may need to replace the connector for a new one. If it is just loose, make sure the connection is secure.

The Computer is Overheating

After continuous use, the laptop begins to get abnormally hot.

Dirty Fan

In many cases, when the fan is dirty, the laptop can begin to overheat since there isn’t any air flowing through the laptop. Please click here to view our guide on how to replace and clean the fan.

Dust inside the Vents

If there is dust in the vents of your laptop, this can also prevent airflow. In this case, use a compressed air bottle to blow into the vents to remove any dust or debris that might have built up. Be sure to use the compressed air bottle only on the vents and no other parts of the laptop.

Old or Dying Battery

In some cases an old or dying battery can make the fan not work properly. Please click here to view our guide on how to replace the battery.

CPU is Overworking

CPU intensive activities such as video editing, digital drafting or online gaming can overwork and overheat your CPU. This can make the fan work really hard in order to compensate for the overworked CPU. Check your task manager to see what is using a majority of your CPU. Ending those tasks should bring your CPU and fan back to normal.

The Battery Doesn't Hold a Charge

The battery dies quickly between each charge, without much use.

Old or Dying Battery

The most common reason that your laptop does not charge is because the battery is old. All laptops have a certain life span and after owning one for a long time, the battery gets worn out. Please click here to view our guide on how to replace the battery.

Charging Cable is Faulty

When the laptop is not charging, check the battery first. If the battery is fine, then the charging cable is faulty. If this is the case, replace the charging cable.

The Fan is Unusually Loud

The laptop fan makes a lot of noise while the laptop is powered on and in use.

Dirty and/or Faulty Fan

If the fan is dirty or broken it can lead to excessive noise while operating your laptop. In this case, you will have to take the laptop apart to check whether the fan is broken or simply dirty. Please click here to view our guide on how to replace and clean the fan.

Overworking the CPU

CPU intensive activities such as video editing, digital drafting or online gaming can overwork and overheat your CPU. This can make the fan work really hard in order to compensate for the overworked CPU. Check your task manager to see what is using a majority of your CPU. Ending those tasks should bring your CPU and fan back to normal.

The Sound is Not Working

Sound is not coming out of the speakers while audio or video is playing.

Audio Driver is out of Date

If your audio no longer works or if your audio is choppy and distorted or if all you are hearing is static noise, your audio driver could be out of date. To update your audio driver, select “Device Manager” in the search box on the taskbar. Select “Audio inputs and outputs” and then select “Search automatically for updated driver software” and lastly select “Update Driver.”

Broken Speakers

If no sound is coming out of the speakers while audio or video is playing, you will need to replace the speakers. Please click here to view our guide on how to replace the speakers.

Dust in Headphone Jack

If there isn't any audio coming out of your headphones or if the audio is choppy and/or very static, there could be dust or debris in your headphone jack or your headphones could be broken. First begin by plugging your headphones into another device to see if audio comes out. If so, you know that there must be dust or debri in your headphone jack. In this case, power your device off and use a Q-tip to gently clean the inside of the headphone jack out or use an air compressor to blow any dust particles out.
