I actually had a really badly cracked digitizer. Using the suction cup did nothing but shatter the digitizer more. I intentionally drove a flat head screw driver into the digitizer to reveal the recess in the body where they are showing the opening-pick. Working around the edge, the glass shattered. You still need to be careful at all of spots noted in step 2.
Do not go under the digitizer more than the 1 mm along the sides or 3-4 mm at the corners as shown in step 29 using the flat grey ring around the edge for a reference. Direct all of your tool force into the body to prevent slipping into critical parts.
The antennas at either side of the home button were the trickiest part as they were thin and slightly attached to the digitizer. I would recommend using a plastic tool for these parts if you are having to 'scrape' the glass off of the tabs of the antenna.
Make sure that during reassembly that the adhesive from the previous digitizer is removed from the iPad body. Denatured Alcohol and 2 dozen q-tips worked just fine. The adhesive liked to be pushed rather than scrubbed. It will clump if you allow it and remove the clumps rather than having to dissolve the adhesive. Work any residue off to leave a clean surface on the body.
I actually started doing this but while lifting the whole digitizer just tore leaving a ring of around the edges. Being careful around the noted spaces, I just removed the center in one 'piece'. Surprisingly this made it easier as the ring round the edge just shattered as you work around the edges. If you hold the iPad up vertically and let the shards fall down as you remove the remaining digitizer the pieces won't fall into the body.
Make sure that the cables haven't stuck to the adhesive on the digitizer as well. Then you just need to "close it like a book". Push the cables down into their cavity and rotate the digitizer into the 'dado' or shelf in the body where the adhesive will stick. The cables will get out of the way naturally without much effort.
Yes. The kit does not have the home button so you will need to remove the original and move it to the digitizer assembly.
