Hi,

My trusty Mac mini might not be so trustworthy as I thought. My machine’s specs are 2.3 ghz i7, with 16Gb RAM and an upgraded 1 TB SSD. It never had the Fusion Drive. I bought it new from an Apple Authorised Dealer and they did the memory upgrade before I purchased the Mac. Maybe they also changed the Fusion Drive to a different drive type, but that is not something that I had asked for. Not that it matters now because I have upgraded the drive to the SSD as above and I did that about two years ago. The Mac has been running well since.

A few weeks ago, the Mac started running a little bit slower, or that’s what it seemed like. I monitored it for a couple of days and then one day it started getting really slow. As I hadn’t rebooted it for a while, I decided to shut it down and reboot.

Except that when I rebooted, the screen was completely blank. I tried to reboot again, but I got the same result. I rebooted it a few more times and I continued to get the same blank screen.

I found an old Dell monitor with only a VGA connection on it and I scrounged around and found the adapter to get the VGA monitor connected to my Mac mini. Another reboot. Same result as before - blank screen.

I’m wondering if it is possible to use the HDMI port to connect to a monitor, and would that bypass the ‘display card’? My assumption is probably the worst case scenario where the ‘display card’ has had it, and I think that I’ve read somewhere that the display function is inbuilt on the motherboard.

I don’t want to lose my Mac mini!

To start off a Fusion Drive is made of two different physical drives. A 2.5” HDD and a small blade PCI SSD.

This is part of the 2014 model, the 2012 model didn’t offer it.

OK… let’s move on to your problem. You’ll need to pull the logic board out to inspect the I/O chip which is under the heat sink. In this series the graphics is in this chip. I’m suspecting the chip has failed it often cracks when it goes. The only repair option is replacing the logic board. Here’s the guide to take it out Mac mini Late 2012 ロジックボードの交換

It seems I didn't use the correct terminology when I wrote my question, but I'm not surprised by that. I hope that you understood what I was talking about, at least most of the time.

The information I had about the display being on the motherboard (I knew that I wasn't using the right words for a Mac) was correct. And I've looked at the guide you linked to, thanks.

Firstly, it says that the level of difficulty is "difficult". But a quick read-through of the guide has me wondering what about it is so difficult, other than that there are so many steps! Is that the problem?

The second issue for me is that the logic board is not sold in Australia.

I do know quite a few people who do board-level repairs, so if the chip is available, I would have no problem getting the chip replaced by one of them. This model Mac mini is getting a bit scarce on the used Mac market recently, and prices have shot up.

I'll have to consider my options, depending on what more I can learn.

@kandrew - While it’s not easy, you can get used logic boards like from the UK Late 2012 Mac Mini Logic Boards unless the conversion & duty charges have changed it should be about the same cost as the Pound plus shipping.

Thanks, @Dan, for providing this information for me.

Unfortunately, the conversion rate is not very favourable to me at all. And the cost of the postage is more than half of the cost of the board! Whatever company they use for couriers has decided that I live in a ‘remote’ area and that they are going to charge me for the privilege of doing so!

The ‘tax’ for my remote area is something like $50AUD. Even the major hub city nearby is considered to be a remote area.

Are you located in the U.K.? Is that how you knew about this company? They certainly have a good range of stuff and I would love to get my hands on some of it. I have a lampshade iMac which I think has a dead power supply but they are not very common. Anyway, I’m dreaming about the possibilities now.

I mentioned the possibility of replacing the chip. You didn’t respond to my comment about that. Do you think that it’s not possible to do? Or is that chip not available? Or maybe I’m asking you something above your pay grade! I don’t know.

@kandrew - Sorry not in the UK these days, spent a bit of time there. There is a bloke I do believe he’s in Queensland area which you might find can bring your dead Mac back to life! Paul Daniels Mac repair.

As far as the chip it’s replaceable but you do need a hot air rework station todo it properly. But it will take some skill to do it if it is indeed bad. Paul has the needed tools and skills.
