Removing front panel on iPad 2

In your teardown of the iPad 2 you say to use a heat gun to remove the glass, front panel. In fact you say to use lots of heat. Although I am sure that is what's necessary to soften the glue, is using that much heat going to damage anything inside that should not get hot?

You also said you are looking for other ways to remove the front panel. I'm curious how Apple technicians open it when servicing this device. Of course this is another secret they will never share.

I would like to know what peoples thoughts are on this.

As a glass man or "glazier" by trade, I would offer one bit of advice, which I hope helps your anger while attempting this repair. (Stupid wifi antenna is usually collateral damage, and the glass goes everywhere.) Anyways, when I cut glass, depending on the temperature of the glass it is either very easy or very difficult to break. When it is freezing, its nearly impossible. in mid-summer when temps are around 85-90* F in my shop, the glass flies apart very easily while I am cutting/sanding/moving it. Most materials behave similarly (adhesive, circuitry etc,) Also, pretty much the only way glass breaks is from the edge, corners especially. So keep temperature in mind as you go (try to only get the adhesive hot> maybe try very quickly cooling the surface of the glass after heating the edges so it doesn't fly apart so easily as you work it off. Good luck! Screens are cheap right now, so its a good time to give it a try.

Hi. If you evenly distribute the amount of heat, during short intervals, it should not damage any inner components. We will hopefully have iPad 2 guides as soon as possible.

And to be safe, I would aim the heat away at an angle from the middle of the screen towards the iPads outside edge.

I use mine as a cookie sheet replacement when I make cinnamon rolls - It works great but sometimes I get glass splinters in my cinnamon rolls - they are very painful. After it's been in the oven @ 400 degrees for 10 minutes my Stihl MS261 cuts through it like butter.

I tried heat gun too. It is a pain if the digitizer is already cracked and shattered... but it is doable.

I need to know this, too. I see that iFixit doesn't sell the 3M strips for the iPad 2, but they DO sell them for the original iPad. I can't go to a "high-end glazing shop" so do I use the strips?

Go to a high end glazing shop.. If you own a business go to CRL for anything glass related.

I usually use hairdryer to soften the adhesive when removing digitizer from LCD on smartphone, and I see use a Heat Gun to remove this.

As questioned above, I am afraid the heat may cause the damage to LCD, isn't hair dryer good enough?

I want to know if LCD is safe with 500degree heatgun when removing the glass. I am sure you will have to heat this over 1 min on each side.

I have used heat gun for iPad repair and so far I had no issues.

So one minute of heat gun usage to each side should do the trick? What type of adhesive did you use when you reassembled it?

I just stick to hair dryer tactic. Heat gun makes me nervous. I use heat gun for removing chips and other stuffs but not for iPad. The back housing gets too hot and afraid it may cause damage to LCD.

BTW, there are adhesive tapes specifically made for iPad 2 glass. No glue.

I did use a hair dryer after all because I was nervous about melting the plastic bezel and the home button with a heat gun. It works perfectly! :) Thanks for everyone's advice!!

What about laying the ipad face down on an appropriately sized heat-pack?

I'm talking about those grain filled things that people use for bad backs etc. It might take longer, but may be a bit safer too.

Give it a bit more microwave juice than you would for application to skin, and maybe some pressure and it would be approaching the right temp surely.

I've never had a bad back, or broken ipad so I'm no expert, worth a try though.

I used a heatgun and set the temp on 110 degrees, only used the guitar picks except for seperating the wifi ribbon from the glass. worked great

There already was adhesive on the screen i bought, looks a lot thinner than the 3m strips you can buy everywhere and it's holding on pretty good...

Heat gun works well, get the edge hot and it peels easy.

Tips- A single edge razor blade is IDEAL for the initial lifting of the glass. Have about a dozen guitar picks to leave in place while working your way around. Carefully open the lower right corner about 1/4 inch and un-peel the antenna from the back of the glass (heck they're 2 bucks, just get another in case).

How hot is too hot? I use a heat gun and an infrared thermometer. I stop when i see 200F. So far no damage, but how hot can i heat up the screen?

The ifixit kit worked great for me. It never really got hot enough to burn my hands either. Heat guns may be cool but I am afraid they could damage a component. The ifixit pad was perfect for me.

Rule of thumb Is heat the glass so you can barley touch it , I put mine in my home oven at 80c for 40 minutes it works a treat
