difference between upper or lower bay?

Hi Experts,

I have a Mac Mini Late 2012, bought from year 2013, and, sorry the story is a bit long:

1. In year 2014, I've upgraded my Mac to Fusion Drive,''' I don't recall where the Apple HDD locates (upper or lower bay) for now

''', but after the upgrade, the HDD is in upper bay, and SSD is in lower bay.

2, The fusion drive run very well until two months earlier, there's ticking noise coming out from my mac mini, and OS X keeps poping up error messages saying some system files are damaged, I've taken the mac to genius bar of Apple, and they've also confirmed that the HDD is going to down.

3, I then bought a new HDD, in order to replace the original factory-born, Apple's HDD, and then the problems came.

4, There was another very long story but in the end, today, I've confirmed that there's problem, or in-compatibility for the socket of the upper bay with my own-bought HDD.

I think there's no other person experiencing my issue, since I don't find any result alike via Google: while the HDD is installed inside the Mac mini, and performing a read/write action with huge amount of data, e.g: copying a 50+GB file. It will suddenly disappear, just like an external USB drive that've been unplugged suddenly! After the disk is disappeared, it cannot be found in anywhere, system info/storage, nor system information, nor disk utility. And it won't come back even after reboot. Just like totally been unplugged. The only way to bring it back is do a complete power shut down, and boot again.

You may doubt that the problem is from HDD itself or the cable. But:

A, when I take the HDD outside, and into a USB portable hard disk box, and plug it in as an USB external hard drive, it runs without any problem.

B, I just bought a new upper bay cable and replaced it with the original one, and the issue remain still

the above is surely logged while triggering the issue while doing the copying. And they all start with this: "Failed to issue COM RESET successfully after 3 attempts. Failing...", and I find this thread talking about the message: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/205... it seems the issue may caused by different SATA type between the mother-board and the hard drive.

If that's true, I think the only way for me to use my new HDD is to take it outside the Mac mini and into the external USB portable box, to be as an USB hard disk...

so..what you experts think, any idea?

Please supply the drive SSD as well as the HD (old & new) make and models so we have a better idea whens going on here.

Hi Dan, the SSD is a SanDisk 128 GB, factory HDD is HITACHI 1T, new HDD is Seagate 2T.

A friend of mine just mentioned that maybe it is "disconnected" due to the high temperature. There might have some auto-protection mechanism inside the HDD when the temperature is too high. I think that's reasonable because while it is now in the external USB box, connecting and copying( a huge file, which needs 1-hour time to copy, I do it for testing purpose) I can hardly touch it with my finger, the case is very hot! And I can see the temperature of the CPU is dropped by 10 degrees Celsius from the HDD inside the Mac Mini to outside of it.

Before you took the old drive out did you break the Fusion Drive set?

If not you'll need to put the original drive back and re-establish the Fusion setup to then break correctly before you take the HD drive out. Here's the steps you'll need to follow: How to split up a Fusion Drive.

Hi Dan, thanks for the reply. I didn't do break the Fusion Drive before taking out the old drive. However, I did do works in terminal to re-initiate both SSD & HDD. In the other story I didn't say, I made Fusion Drive for the SSD & new HDD, and then I re-initiate the two drives so now I have the non-fusion drive hard disks (cos' the system always down, which by my judgement today, is/may caused by the upper bay not compatible issue ).

Hi Dan, sure I'd love to show any info that might help you to track the problem. However, could you please be more specific, where can I find the info. you're asking? The HDD I bought is a Seagate 2T, there's mark on the case saying: DOM: 11/2015, Site: DGT, MSIP-REM-STX-Momentus-D .... I'm not sure if such info is you want, on the other hand, the Apple factory HDD, which was about to die, is a HITACHI 1T, made at OCT-12... I don't think there's any tag seems like model info. on the cover on the HDD...

Lets do this if the drive is responding at all in the system the OS will list its info in the System Report SATA/SATA Express breakout section. Go to About this Mac from the Apple Icon in the upper left and then click on System report. copy the drive info from there and paste it in a fresh answer.

If the drive is not responding take a snapshot of the label side of the drive and paste that in a fresh answer

That way we can see what it tells us.

Hi Dan, Currently I've taken the HDD out into a USB hard drive box. Do you mean I need to take it back inside the Mac mini and then check that info.?
