Chromebook Acer C720P not turning on

My chromebook won't turn on

With the charger connected, the charging led turns on, so I know it's getting power. (and I have left it on charge overnight).

When I press the power button, it won't turn on. No screen, no screen back light, no fan. Nothing.

I have tried holding down the power button for 30 secs. Nothing.

I have tried escape + reload + power. Nothing.

I have tried all of the above without power connected. Nothing

Help!

There is a super secret button I found that fixes this. I don't understand what this button is for but once you add some tape inside to permanently depress this tiny button, the computer will start up again.

You have to unscrew the bottom and pop off the plastic housing. Next to the right hinge (looking at the board with hinges on top), you will see a tiny little black switch box with a minuscule spring switch. Press the switch and power returns. Wad up some tape and put it where that switch meets the plastic housing. Then replace the housing and screws. You should be golden for a few months until the tape wears down.

I'm having this same problem. Will try this "super secret button" fix. This is an older thread, but I'm wondering if Sunil solved this problem and if so, which fix worked? Thanks!

I have since tried other things besides tape to keep the small button pressed (sponge, bits of plastic, etc.). Finally, I just removed everything and let the button press against the back plastic cover (as intended) and without screwing screws back in place, the c720p seems to be working okay now. This has been the longest stretch without power loss in a while. So, to say the least, it's a very finicky little button. Who put it there? I don't know... it's very odd! I can't find any info. online about this small part.

I didn't have any luck with taping the button down on my C720p. The right blue light is on only while plugged in and I thought it was charging but now I don't think so. Tried a different charger and a new battery. It probably needs a motherboard as Alexander Somma mentioned below

It won't work to tape the button down because the button is very sensitive and the tape doesn't have enough tension to hold it down once you let go. I'd recommend wedging a ball of tape in there so when you close the case, it forces the button to be pressed. The blue light should be on if you'd done it correctly.

The "super secret button" fix works for me! I manage about sixty of these Acer C720s and during the Fall and into January, I've had about five suddenly exhibit this power/charging problem. I was keeping them for parts until reading this thread and presto depressing the "ssb" fixes both problems. You can cut a very small piece of metal foil tape used in HVAC ducting to press and hold the button. Be careful not to overhang on the pin side of the switch or you may short circuit the incoming wiring. The foil tape is very sticky and rigid stuff. I use it judiciously to secure the battery where mounts have broken as well. Thanks for your post on this COREDESIGN! I would NEVER have found this on my own.

I'm sorry that's happening for you. The same issue suddenly happened with my c720p the other day. I'm going to see about replacing the mother board.

For future reference: Unfortunately, the motherboard aka "Main Board" is likely faulty, and must be replaced. Source: I have repaired 100s of these in the school district I work in.

Just now seeing the "super secret button" fix. I will try this next time I come upon a dead Chromebook. It seems that switch just prevents a boot-up when the bottom case has been removed. Perhaps it's not getting pressed down properly in some units.
