Phone Shuts Down ‘Randomly’

After short usage, the phone shuts down (or never powers on).

Phone Overheating

The battery may be old, the phone has too many apps running in the background (overloading CPU), the battery is no longer holding charge, and the device operating temperature is too hot. Try closing out unused apps, maintaining a safe operating temperature, and enabling power saver mode.

High device brightness

High brightness could be causing the phone to overheat. Try not to keep the brightness higher than what you need. Swipe down on the top right and use the bar (labeled with a sun icon) to manipulate the devices brightness.

Out-of-Date System

Always make sure to update the software and the apps of the phone to make sure bugs in the phones software do not use the CPU unnecessarily, which can make the device running significantly hotter. To update your phone, go to Settings -> System Update -> Check for new system update

Using Universal Charger

Using a universal charger could also cause overheating since the charger was not built specifically for the LG V50 ThinQ. Make sure only to use an LG-approved charger for your phone.

Poor Battery Life

The battery isn't lasting as long as it used to, or as long as it should.

Battery in Need of Calibrating

One of the most effective and cost-free methods of ensuring the quality of your battery is to calibrate it. To achieve this, use up the battery until it has completely run out. Then, charge your phone all the way up to 100% without using it to calibrate the battery.

Software Requires Updating

While it may not be the main culprit to a faulty battery, making sure that your device is up-to-date is beneficial to keeping your phone as functional as possible. To check your software, open Settings -> System Updates -> Check for new system update.

Location Services On

Having location services on can easily drain the battery of your device, due to the amount of data it requires to run that function. It’s good practice to only allow location services to be on when necessary. A good way to see if this is draining your battery is to disable location services and monitor your battery. You can disable location services entirely by opening Settings -> Lock screen & security -> Location -> Off.

Apps Crashing Suddenly

Apps are closing out unexpectedly, and causing issues with navigating and using the phone properly.

Outdated Apps

Outdated Apps can cause crashes. Make sure all your apps are up to date. Open the Google Play Store -> Click the hamburger menu in the top right -> Check for updates -> Update All

Apps Running Slowly

  • Reducing RAM & storage on your phone may be the issue.
    • To reduce its impacts, try closing all applications that are not currently being used, and potentially uninstalling apps that are rarely used.
  • Turn off Battery Saving Mode if enabled as it decreases the device’s performance to save battery power. To turn off battery saver, simply Swipe down from the top right of the screen -> find the “Battery Saver” widget -> Turn On either Extended or Maximum.

Full Storage

Sometimes apps on your phone need continual updating leading to more storage being taken from your phone. If that is the case, check if you have an ample amount of phone storage available. If not, consider deleting any unused apps from your phone. Search through your phone home screen, and delete any apps you know you no longer use.

Full storage prevents writing operations to the phone's disc, which is a vital part of operating systems. Due to this, your phone may forcefully shut down when it can't copy important system data and fetch it to the disc, or when it fetches the wrong data from the disc. This issue is of critical importance to fix, although fixing a full storage is not exactly a difficult task.

When clearing storage, simply find apps or documents you don't need or haven't used in a long enough time that you're comfortable deleting them. You can always back up your important data on your laptop or other devices as well, should you find that you need to perform this purge. Rebooting your phone may also clear some storage, as temporary system and app update files will be deleted. To reboot your phone, Hold the power button for 3 seconds -> Power off and restart -> RESTART.

Malfunctioning Bluetooth Connection

One or more bluetooth devices won’t connect, infinitely loops or can’t be discovered.

'Could not Connect' or Device Cannot be Discovered Error

Always keep the device software updated to the latest version to ensure that old versions are not causing it to malfunction or have bugs. A quick and easy way to fix this would be to turn off safe mode and restart your device.

If that does not work, your Bluetooth may need a reboot. Disable Bluetooth by going into Settings -> Connected Devices -> Bluetooth -> ON, turn it off and wait 30 seconds, then re-enable it.

Another way to fix this error is to reset Bluetooth settings to default. To do this, go to Settings -> System -> Restart & reset -> Network settings reset -> Reset Settings -> Reset Settings. After this, you need to restart your device and turn Bluetooth back on by either going into settings or swiping down from the top and clicking the Bluetooth icon. Note that this will also reset your network settings, so you will have to reconnect to your network.

There are other potential solutions to this issue:

Try forgetting your Bluetooth device by viewing the Paired Devices section in Bluetooth -> Select the Cog next to the device -> Unpair. Wait about 10 seconds and re-pair the device.

Unresponsive Screen

Randomly or constantly entire screen or sections stop processing taps.

"Reboot" your screen

Turn your screen off, then back on.

Restart your phone by Holding power button (3 seconds) -> Power off and restart -> RESTART

If you can’t get your phone to restart, you can forcefully restart it by holding down the power and lower volume keys for 10 seconds

In rare cases, your phone may have some capacitive panels which are broken, if this is the case, you’ll notice sections of your screen that are impossible to tap no matter what you do. If this happens to you, you’ll need to install a new screen!

Check Device for Updates

Check if the phone has a pending system update available to be downloaded. If having issues with a specific app, check for any possible updates for that app. You can check for system updates with Settings -> System Updates -> Check for new system update. You can check for app updates with Google Play -> Dots in the top right -> Updates -> Update All.

Unresponsive While Using App

Check the phone to make sure there is amble memory and storage left on your phone. If there is ample storage and you notice problem while using a certain app try clearing the app cache in settings by going to Settings -> Apps & notifications -> App info -> Select the app -> Clear cache.

Black Unresponsive Screen

Initially try to reboot your phone. If behavior continues, check for system updates that may be pending. When noticing it occurs on specific apps, uninstall then reinstall the app, or check for updates as well. If problems continue, the device may need to be taken in to be serviced by professionals.

Lagging User Interface

The phone display is experiencing delays when in use.

3rd Party Launchers

Any 3rd party launchers can create problems while navigating the device so uninstalling them may solve the issue. If problems still arise, try rebooting the device as a final step.
