What would need to be replaced in the described scenario?

My 2011 3DS has been through a lot, and I want to give her some TLC with some new parts and future proofing.

I over-charged her across a few months and needed to replace the battery because of it expanding. However, now she seems a bit slower/fried, game cards not loading in sometimes, boot-up taking several seconds etc.

I've recently seen videos with replacing the charger port with usb-c, replacing the bottom screen for a glass one etc.

I basically want to know what things i should look into replacing and upgrading to help her run more smoothly and last longer!

I'm happy to answer further questions and resources for further reading on 3DS modding is appreciated as I'm also unsure of what I should be searching for.

Thanks for your time!!

Hi!

In my opinion, I would just let it be and won't replace anything, unless it's broken.

It's possible when you open it to replace things, that you could damage something.

Is the 3DS up to date? If yes, you could try a factory reset and see if that fixes the slowness (making a back up first is recommended).

As for the modding part, I can't help you with this. I know that @darthmango knows more about this!

Unfortunately, there's not much to be done in terms of performance. Luma does have some options to help it, but those are exclusive to the New models. Did you happen to upgrade the SD card recently? Bigger cards come with longer boot times.

As for the game card issues, try this: Grab a card, load the pins up with a bunch of isopropyl alcohol, and push it in and out of the slot several times to clean any dirty card slot pins.

Now, further reading:

3ds.hacks.guide has modding instructions and basic info, but I assume you've been there already

wiki.hacks.guide probably has everything most users would ever want to know, from random homebrews to SOAP transfers

3dbrew covers a more technical side of things, and starts getting into homebrew development

(One more thing since koppie mentioned factory resetting. That might work, but it will of course shuffle the encryption key and render your SD contents unusable. That part can be worked around though)

i forgot to mention an issue in the main post; would you know what i should do about the system struggling to detect the new battery properly? or would you say that's from frying it from prolonged over-charging? basically it will register as fully charged, then switch to red flashing, then blue, then orange. It's one of the main reasons i was looking into trying to upgrade and tlc her !

Orange is pretty weird. Let's try calibrating the battery. I can't find the official instructions, but essentially you charge it to full + 1-2 hours, run it until it dies completely, then plug it back in and leave it until it's full again. You might have to do that a few times, but eventually the battery level should be read correctly
