power adapter loses power.

When I plug my power adapter into my outlet the green light shows, but when I plug into my pc the green light cuts off immediately. (I have a Dell AIO 5490 I just chose a random device because my device wasn't an option)

Hi @isaiahstew89530

The adapter is going into self protect mode presumably because there a problem either with the DC-In jack e.g. internal short circuit perhaps or in the power distribution section of the motherboard.

Just as a check to make sure that it isn't a problem with the output cable of the adapter, plug the adapter into the power outlet only (do not plug into the PC) and check what happens to the green light if you firmly hold the adapter cable plug that is inserted into the PC and gently flex the cable where it exits from the back of the plug.

If the green light turns off and on as you flex the cable the problem is in the adapter cable. If not it is in the PC.

I can't find a schematic for the motherboard, but here's the service manual that will help, at least to gain access to the motherboard so that you can check if the DC-In jack (supplier example only) is OK i.e. use an Ohmmeter to check if there a short circuit connection between the +ve and -ve input legs of the jack and then prove whether it is in the jack or further into the motherboard - you have to unsolder the jack from the board to isolate it one way or the other or if there's anything obviously wrong on the motherboard e.g. burnt out or heat stressed components etc.

What to do if I don't own an Ohmmeter. I don't really have tools to manually fix it myself but I don't have enough money to send the product to dell.

If the PC is no longer covered by the warranty, contact a reputable, professional electronics or computer repair service in your area and ask for a quote or at least a guesstimate of how much it would cost to repair.

It never hurts to ask ;-)

It may be a bit of a stupid question, but wouldn't it be worth trying a different power adapter first? If i remember correctly, dell power supplies are relatively standardized so finding another to test with should be easy, i've seen similar failure modes to this with a failed PSU, the machine trying to draw any power at all from the charger makes it freak out, often due to failing capacitors in the charger! Kind of like a failing/failed lithium battery.

I would have to actually BUY a power adapter first as I don't have a spare but I would order a new one and update you if it is an success or not.

A quick question, how do I know which is power adapter I need to buy?
