HPOfficeJet 4650 will no longer scan

This has been a brilliant component, hardwired into the computer, operating on 'Windows 10'. Suddenly, although the printer still prints perfectly, it will no longer scan. States: "An error occurred whilst acquiring the image”. Have tried HP Print and Scan Doctor but can't get answer. Any suggestions, please? Please note: I'm a novice so it would be appreciated if any answer could be explained in a simple manner! Many thanks.

ADDITIONAL -please help! Just returned home: Printer now won't work. Tried both methods, goes to 'HP SMART', message: WE DID NOT FIND ANY AVAILABLE PRINTERS. I'm in despair. What is happening? Is HP just trying to sell more printers?

Does the printer turn on?

If you haven't already done so and if the printer turns on, try resetting the printer by turning it off (if on) and then disconnecting the power to the printer. Then press and hold the printer's power button operated for a full 30 seconds and then release it.

Reconnect the power and turn it on and check if it works OK.

Can you use the printer's control panel to see if copying, printing and scanning work OK?

Many thanks for your kindness in replying, Jayeff, but only the copy function is now working. I've tried switching the printer off (and unplugging it for a few minutes), it took some while (and a lot of clicking noises) for the display to show, but, although it appears operational, nothing works. Have tried the 'Typewriter' logo and also 'File- Print' but to no avail.

Hi Jayeff. Printer control panel cannot find computer (it's hardwired!). Only facility now available is copying. I've never seen 'H.P.Smart' before (appears when I try to print). Cannot access 'HP Smart download! What have HP done?Why can't the computer find the printer (or vice versa)?

You could try a firmware update and see if that works. (Be aware that it may not even install if the firmware version already installed is the same version).

If no good then it may be a mainboard and/or a hardware problem. Finding replacement parts for either may not be economically viable given the age of the printer. Commiserations

Hi,

If the PC can't find the printer it means that the printer is not communicating with the computer.

Don't understand what you mean by hard wired? Most printers have a removable cable (usually USB) that connects between the printer and the computer's USB port. This cable is used for data transfer (communication).

Given that the printer doesn't work properly from its control panel it points to a mainboard problem or a power problem (a different board in the printer) or both.

Here's a parts list for the printer.

A quick search using the part numbers for a few parts e.g. main pca and power board shows that these parts are NLA and hard to find even 2nd hand.

In a way you could say planned obselescense by HP

Check your USB cable and printer. Check your USB cable from the printer to the Windows device and be sure it is plugged in.

Update your printer drivers. Press and hold the “Windows” button and the “R” button.

Get the latest printer drivers from the manufacturer's website.

Run the Printer Troubleshooter.

Many thanks Jayeff but I'VE DONE IT! Wow. It took me a long time but now both scan and printing facilities work. I went into "SETTINGS" and found that both of these facilities were not available because, for some weird reason, the printer (HP4650) was no longer my 'DEFAULT' printer. I've no idea what changed it as I have not downloaded anything. Anyway, I changed the printer back to the original, 'default' settings and both facilities now work. Thank you so much for your kindness and expertise in helping me. God bless.
