Nvidia wont run with resolution over 1366x786

Booting up a t420 with the nvidia gpu installed. usually they let you set the screen resolution to 1600x900. all drivers installed up to date. running active 64bit Win 7 pro

Did you also install the ThinkPad Monitor INF file for Win7 v4.38 dated 6.1.2015? According to the READ ME file this package installs the software (monitor information file) which defines the following items for ThinkPad LCD. - Monitor INF (Information file for the "maximum resolution" and monitor naming). If you didn't install it I'm wondering if your original MON INF file has been changed/altered at all. Maybe you could find the existing INF file in your laptop and see what resolutions are listed. Just a thought. According to the READ ME, support for the T420 was added in Ver. 4.35.
