Background and Identification
Honda Motor Company, Ltd. is a Japanese public multinational corporation primarily known as a manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles. After World War II, bicycles with auxiliary engines increased in popularity in Japan. Honda’s first mass production of motorcycles began in 1949. Honda began exporting motorcycles to Taiwan and the Philippines in 1952. Since 1955, Honda has been the largest motorcycle manufacturer in Japan.
In the 1960s, Honda began exporting motorcycles to the United States. Honda motorcycles in the U.S. were marketed for the everyman, whereas the motorcyclists in the United States were considered rebellious and antisocial. Honda’s plan upon entering the U.S. market was to focus on large 300 cc motorcycles. Larger Honda motorcycles tended to suffer from reliability and performance issues when ridden long distances along U.S. highways. However, smaller Honda motorcycles such as the Super Cub became popular in large cities like San Francisco. By late 1963, Honda had sold over 90,000 motorcycles in the United States.
Honda produced about three million motorcycles each year during its peak in the 1980s. In late 2014, Honda had sold over 300 million motorcycles worldwide. India became the largest market for Honda motorcycles in 2017. Honda has 59 percent of the scooter market segment in India.
Honda motorcycles can be identified by the Honda motorcycle emblem, which has consisted of a bird’s wing and the name “Honda” in capital letters since the 1960s.
