Why won't my laptop won't start when it isn't plugged in?

When I try to turn my laptop on when not connected to AC power, it doesn't turn on. When I connect it and turn it on, it shows a battery full and charging symbol. It is a Windows 10. Help a brother out.

Hi,

What happens if you disconnect the charger after the laptop has started and booted all the way to the Windows desktop?

Does it stay on or turn off straight away?

さんによる

@jayeff the screen goes black right away and it shuts down (most of the time). Sometimes nothing happens, sometimes it also turns on without any charge connection.

Hey Ahaan!

The system wont let me post as an answer for some reason, maybe it's because I just joined or something?

Anyway, how long have you had the laptop? It sounds like that the battery may be dying out or shorting out somewhere from the batter possibly being old. Since your using Windows 10, would you be able to do the following steps and see if it reports anything wrong with the battery?

-Access the Windows Powershell as an admin

-Type or paste in the following in bold which will run a report and tell you where it is saved: powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:\battery-report.html"

On the report, I would check both the battery capacity history and the battery life estimates to see if the battery is on it’s last legs. I don’t believe that it will show you anything if the battery is shorting out but this can be one more thing to possibly rule out.

@Suede Young Hello thanks for responding.

It just gives me something that says that the written message isn't a valid one. I hope this gets resolved and how can I make sure that I need a new battery?

Hi @frenz ,

It sounds like a battery problem, but your laptop is a fairly new model is this correct?

If it is less than 12 months old check the warranty about getting it repaired.

If it is out of warranty then the laptop will have to be opened and inspected. It may be a faulty battery connection for example but it still could be a faulty battery, it happens.

Here’s a link to the ifixit Acer Nitro 5 AN515-53-55G9 Battery Replacement which may be of some help.

Hey @jayeff

My laptop is well over an year. But is there a way that I can make sure that this is a battery problem. It all happened so suddenly. I thought it was supposed to happen gradually. But it all started after I got the new beta windows update, that is, very recently. And in the off case , would you be able to suggest me where to get a battery from? And how much it would cost me ?

Thank you.

Hi @frenz ,

Try rolling back the update to the previous version and check if the problem is there still.

If it is still there then it could just be coincidence that it occurred at about the same time

The image in the guide I posted shows the battery model number as AC14B8K (but your battery may be different so you may have to check what it is).

Once you have the battery model number, search online using the battery model number only in the search term of your browser to get results for suppliers and prices

@jayeff The weirdest thing happens. I uninstall the updates and no more problems. I don't really get it but it worked I guess.

Thanks

Hi @frenz ,

That's good news for you.

Has the laptop got the latest BIOS firmware / chipset drivers installed? Just a thought.

Interesting that I cannot find Acer support online for the your model number (is it Acer Nitro 5 AN515-53-55G9?) but can for Acer Nitro 5 AN515-51 models, unless they are both the same BIOS etc.

I've found in the past not to rush to install the latest updates, especially beta updates as they may not be fully tested

Wait a few days after release and then search online if others are having problems before updating.

Not very nice to let others find out if there are any problems but saves a lot of headaches.

Cheers.

Hello @jayeff

Yep makes sense about the rush part. I think they have the same BIOS firmware. Its nice that I don't have to invest in a new battery right now.

Cheers.
