Mac shuts down when booting from bootable USB

Hello,

I recently had my stock hard drive crash. So I bought an OWC SSD. Since it’s a blank SSD with nothing on it, I only have a few options on how to get my mac up and running again.

What I have tried so far:

  • Internet Recovery (shuts down before getting to the utilities screen)
  • Booting from an old backup (doesn’t work)
  • Creating a bootable USB with High Sierra (Shuts down after about 10% of loading)

I have been told that DiskMaker X works really well. However, the only working Mac I have access to is at work, and I can’t really be downloading software on a shared Mac.

Does anyone have any other suggestion on what to do, or why my Mac shuts down so quickly when trying to load a bootable USB? I’ve been told multiple times that that’s my best option.

I just feel like I am out of luck here, and should just give up on trying to revive this computer.

Also, I would like to add that the “P, =, -” keys do not work for some reason, so I am unable to reset the PRAM.

Thank you in advance for your help/suggestions.

If you connect a USB keyboard, you can reset the PRAM.

I have seen MacBooks shut down during the boot process when the battery is bad. Hold down OPTION-D at startup to start into internet diagnostics, run a test, and see if it finds anything bad.

This actually sounds plausible. I will definitely try this out. Thanks!

What is the exact drive you got from OWC?

OWC offers both a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) and a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) 2.5" SSD's. Both are fixed speed so you need to use the correct one. Your system only has a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) interface. So you may have a drive which is too fast for your system.

Reference: MacBookPro7,1. review your systems specs.

I bought the following kit:

I know it comes with an external enclosure, but I actually installed inside my macbook. I also do admit that I didn't do much research when purchasing the ssd. I only selected the model of my macbook and bought what was suggested.

Good! You got the correct one! From the OWC links specs: "Interface SATA 3Gb/s & 1.5Gb/s"

Besides the SSD’s SATA I/O speed needing to be matched to your systems SATA ports I/O speed. You may also need to replace the SATA cable as often they fail. The problem is the rough aluminum uppercase wears the insulation off and it can also fail do to excessive bending with the corner folds. The folds need to be smooth arcs, not sharp creases.

Here’s the needed part MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2009-Mid 2010) Hard Drive Cable and here’s the guide you’ll need to follow MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010のハードドライブケーブルの交換 to help protect the cable I place a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses over to help isolate it. I also use a bamboo skewer or a ballpoint pens inner ink straw to shape the fold.

Hello!

So I bought the cable and installed it. Unfortunately, my computer is doing the same thing as before :(

After I select the hard drive, it loads for about 10 seconds, and then shuts off.

Boy Kate no breaks here! ;-{

So you have no means to get access to another Mac to create a bootable OS installer, did you try an external keyboard? The other option is to disconnect the battery and then hold the power button down for a good minute and then plug in the battery and MagSafe charger back in the system should boot up with a clean SMC settings How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac.

Which what I would have done.

I don't think resetting the PRAM would have made a difference Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac.
