After update to iOS 11 Touchscreen unresponsive

The Ifixit-Replacement-Touchscreen of my iPhone 6 does not accept any touch input after upgrading to iOS 11. When I downgrade to iOS 10 it works fine again.

What's the deal?

Edit by benjamen50:

Note that if you upgrade to iOS 11 with an original screen then switch to aftermarket it should work fine after that for touch screen issue.

I just bought the phone and haven't backed it up. How can I downgrade my iOS?

による

i got the same problem too.

Ios 11 killed my 6s screen.

So sad i can't update my 6s to ios 11.

i read some articles from google, may be 6s need to turn off the 3D touch first before doing the ios 11 update.

による

I have the same issue.

I tried restarting, rebooting, restoring to factory defaults, and I tried to go back to the 10.3.3. version but iTunes won't allow the install. It gets almost to the end and then gives an error code. I've spend 6 hours trying all of Apple's suggestions. Now I'm going to go into Apple and see what they can do.

による

can you please update us with what they'll suggest regarding this issue ?

We have seen similar issues in the past with aftermarket screens not playing nice with phones during the updating process. At one point we had to install a broken original screen, run the update, then put the new aftermarket back on. This seemed to alleviate the issue. Frustrating but worked at that time. That being said we have not seen anyone with this yet at our shop. You should contact iFixit customer service and see if they have any new recommendations.

I went to apple they basically said it's not the update it's a hardware issue which came to light after the update. Total coincidence I don't agree.

による

They suggested I replace my screen for $149!!!!

による

I'm confused. You reinstalled the original screen, ran an update, then put the aftermarket screen back on and it worked?

による

@john yes we have seen this be successful in the past and currently. I can confirm we have now seen about 3 of these issues. This process has worked. Also has begun to spring up in other threads as affecting iPhone 7s. I can not independently confirm the 7 s are at risk yet. It seems to really be primarily 6S.

I have the same problem in my iPhone 7+ and downgraded to iOS 10.3.3. Have you checked that this issue can be resolved on ios 11.0.1 ?

There are quite a few questions on this forum regarding this issue (as well as great answers). Unfortunately for end-users, a lot of the best info is on specialized discussion groups. So I have created a blog post that summarizes the most current and relevant information and I have been updating it almost daily.

The bottom line right now is that the problem is with aftermarket screens produced with Hancai or Tianma LCD's using the Aichungjia (a Flex/IC manufacturer) "copy" driver appear to be incompatible with iOS 11. This driver is said to be unable to handle the iOS configuration and therefore shutting down and causing the lack of Touch functionality.

The only real, practical solution right now is to either downgrade to iOS 10 while you still can ( instructions for how to downgrade iOS to 10.3.3 (WikiHow) or install an original/OEM grade replacement screen. I'm confident that the aftermarket screen manufacturers will correct this problem moving forward. In the meantime, contact your local repair shop (or vendor if you repaired it yourself) to see if they can offer you a replacement.

Apple has just released an update to iOS 11. Version 11.0.1 is now available for download. However, Apple does not state what bug fixes were included in this release. It is possible that this will attempt to address the "Touch not working" issue as we have learned that Apple engineers were contacting independent repair shops to understand the nature of this problem.

For those that are interested, you can click on my profile for a link to my blog.

EDIT

Update 2017/10/11 - Apple just released iOS version 11.0.3 and it claims to address the Touch Failure on aftermarket screens. For those of you that have been waiting for an official fix, it appears to be here. Make sure to comment below if this update solves your problem.

Hello @anniel. This is interesting. While the main issue plaguing iOS 11 is with aftermarket screens, there are numerous reports of "original" devices suffering from strange malfunctions as well. What device do you have?

による

I have the 6s with the original screen. I upgraded Monday, October 2nd. Yesterday afternoon, October 4th, touch screen when the phone is unlocked stopped responding. Some of the apps/icons worked in the lock screen. I could play music and use the flashlight, disable/enable the wifi, airplane mode and cellular data, and adjust volume and screen brightness. Turning off the phone has always worked for me. This time the phone would not turn off and I had to let the battery die. I'm charging it now and hoping it works properly.

Coincidentally, I found and installed 11.0.3 on my original phone, seconds after finding this discussion.

And the update seems to have corrected the poor touchscreen responsiveness.

Perfect timing! Thanks to all.

Did you downgrade to 10.3.3 first and then upgrade again? Or just swapped screens with iOS 11?

による

reinstalling the old lcd then downgrading ?or just installing the old lcd with the new update?

I think what may be happening is after the upgrade to 11, the OS boots and attempts to find all the hardware it is expecting and loads the appropriate drivers or kexts for that hardware. When a third party screens controller isn't the same that is used by Apple is detected, it doesn't load that driver. So the touch never works. This would make sense because a fix I'm seeing around the internet that works is to install the original screen with the Apple controller, upgrade to 11, let it load the touchscreen driver, then swap screens. Since the driver had already been picked before hand, it just works with the new screens controller.

I might be wrong about this, but it seems like a change Apple made in os 11.

Interesting so the issue only occurs when an iOS 11 upgrade is performed with an aftermarket screen.

We had the same Problem, but only with the Display from ifixit. We had around 100 customers with an iPhone 6s oder 6s plus that updated on iOS 11 and the touch screen stopped working after 2 min. We also have a other supplier the provides us with refurbished units. These work with iOS 11. And even the aftermarket LCDs work with iOS 11. The problem occurs only with the Displays from ifixit and only on iPhones 6s and plus. The Display for iPhone 7 and 7 plus are working on iOS 11. In my opinion there is no way to fix the 6s Display . We tried to replace the chipset on the LVDS with the original Chipset. But the Displays are not compatible with the original ones. Apple updated their drivers. We even tested the ifixit Display on iOS 11.1 beta with the same results. I´m really wondering that ifixit does not publish this issue with their Displays. I´m really happy that we changed our supplier 2 month ago and reduced the use of ifixit Displays, because the Display from our other supplier work fine on iOS 11.

By after market screen, do you mean a replaced broken screen or a new phone that Apple installed an after market screen after the update. I have a 7+. For the most part , touch works. But things like a back button in Facebook, or share or next in Instagram I have to hit over and over again to get it to work.

Had same problem, you dont need the old screen, just take out your screen and try to power it on without the screen (unplugged) and put the screen on again and turn it on.

Try it a couple of times if it doesnt work at first hand, taking it off and plug in it on again while restaring it.

please and tell us if you used a screw driver to take your screen off. I see that mine is lifted and I may be able to take it off but I don't want to if I need to use a screw driver.

による

Ok, no luck, mine is not working again. I'm so frustrated right now...

I had same problem on my 6s. I had to downgrade back to iOS 10.3.3. Download firmware from www.iclarified.com. After download put your IPhone in DFU mode. In iTunes press shift & restore & find your iOS firmware you downloaded & restore.

による

Great news for me people!! I just left the phone home today, when i came home my iphone was turned of for some reason when i started it, it suddenly worked again?? I dont know how but it fixed itself..

Edit: Phone worked for 3 minutes then touch screen went unresponsive again, back to square one..

So far, the only solution I have been able to find is to downgrade to iOS 10.3.3. You have to act quickly as Apple will not be signing the 10.3.3 download much longer. If you have a Mac or PC running the latest version of iTunes, you can force it to install iOS 10 on your iPhone. You can find the iOS 10 download here...

I was able to get my iPhone 7plus working again by downgrading. What a waste of a Saturday morning :( Now I've gotta go to the Apple Store and beg them to take my money for a OEM screen.

I installed a new screen about a week ago and then attempted to install iOS 11 when it became available, which resulted in my touch screen not working at all. I tried a hard restart many times, completely wiped my phone and restored it from a backup to get iOS 10 back. This process let me get my touch screen working again, but obviously not a good permanent fix. I eventually tried the suggested fix of putting my original apple screen back on, installing iOS 11 (I did that without the home button just fine, btw -- I got lazy and didn't want take it off the replacement screen), and putting the new screen back on. I'm happy to report that everything now works! The touch screen is working properly and everything else appears to be working normally. I hope this helps those of you that still have the original screen.

Restoring the phone with the original screen and switching it after doesn't work. The touch will work for a few mins and then stop. I'm curious why this is only happening for the 6s. I did a 5s and 7 with no issues. From reading online it seems the problem is with the touch IC chip on the aftermarket 6s screens.

Yes that procedure must be followed for 7 series since ios 11. I have done a few since ios 11 no problem Aftermarket screens will work. The problem appears to be just with the 6s. (not sure about 6s plus as I haven't had one come on yet since ios 11). I'm hearing some after market screens will still work with the 6s but am not sure which ones. From what I understand Chinese manufacturers are aware and already know what needs to be done for the 6s screens to work with iOS 11. I'm sure the new screens that will be coming out of China will work fine. It would be very sick of Apple to prevent 3rd party parts to work on their phones. No other industry does that. Imagine if you could only buy parts for your Chevy straight from the gm dealership and otherwise your vehicle wouldn't start. As if making like an 800% markup on their phones and all the app store purchases isn't enough.

Thought I'd add my bit here.

Had the same issue, tried a different screen from what was installed (better quality) but same thing.

Hard reset - Same thing

Put a genuine screen on - works.

So installed all the small parts on the damaged genuine screen, fitted it, put in dfu mode and reset/updated to 11.02.

Removed the screen, done the usual replacement, and worked..... for 10 seconds.

Got into contact of the manufacturer i deal with, and hats off, they responded back promptly late into the evening, and was trying all sorts their end.

This is what they sent me:

"After upgraded the iPhone to iOS 11.0 (The touch not work) , our factory has tried many times with different methods with different mobile phone this afternoon , and the solve method is upgrade your phone system to iOS 11.02 (Not 11.0 or 11.1) .

Also the testing details as below :

1. Upgrade to iOS 11.0 : Touch not work . We must replace original or refurbished LCD , then it is ok

2. Upgrade to iOS 11.01 : Touch not work . If we make Hard Reset , the touch would be work for few seconds or keep working to the screen power off . Then , the touch not work again and need to hard reset again .

3. Upgrade to iOS 11.02 : Touch work good .

So we suggest update to iOS 11.02 version ."

Done what they said for 11.02 which we a battery pull and power cycle as such, and it worked, until the phone woke up from sleeping.

Thus bit threw me off, as I was doing this with the after market screen which the phone originally had on, so swapped it over to the ones I buy off the manufacturer, done it again, and after sleeping/waking/powering off & on. It still works!

Hopefully this may help someone with this issue, because this was giving me a right headache, cancelled all other Repairs, and wasn't sure if my stock was effectively useless!

Your supplier said to go to 11.0.2 but earlier you said you tried that before and it didn't work. You also say it didn't work long term after. Can you confirm?

による

That's because I had also was using a different manufacturer of Screen to what my supplier was giving me advice on (this screen was bought a year ago off someone else whilst looking for a new supplier until o found these guys). So when this different make screen put the phone into this state of being unresponsive, only a genuine screen would work.

But once I done a power cycle with my suppliers Screen, it worked.

The screen that failed must of had once of these flexes that do not work properly regardless of what you do.

I would suggest, if you've reset the phone with a genuine Screen, and done the above, and it still doesnt work, you have a screen which will not work regardless.

These steps above must work specifically for this manufacturers flex.

I done another screen replacement with this new batch of screens I have, and It worked like every other time I done it.

I will contact them again, and ask if they know what exactly is causing it?

I had had this problem when I was using ios 10. I had to reset the phone after installing 11, that fixed my problem not sure about you. I would just plug the phone to a computer with iTunes, launch iTunes, select your device, then if you have important photos take them off, then after pulling all the photos you want to keep select restore device/phone what ever it says just reset the phone . Hope this work for you :)

iOS 11 works well on my 6s so I don't think the model itself has a problem. I have noticed a couple of glitches on my iPad 4.

I'd try to do a factory reset and see if you have the problem without any of your stuff on the phone. If all's well then try to do a restore from backup.

Well I had another customer today with a non responsive iPhone 7 plus screen after updating last night. The screen she had was installed 6 months ago and had no cracks in it. Anyway I tried several screens and even an OEM apple screen with the same issue repeating itself and the solution I eventually found was changing out the front camera flex. Once I replaced that it worked 100%.

I suspect the same thing is wrong with my iPhone 7. I replaced the screen and front camera about a month ago. When the iOS 11 update hit my phone I went back to the original screen only to find the same problems occurring! Where did you get the replacement camera flex cable that you used to fix the iPhone 7? It seems to me that you can only trust a truly OEM part at this point.

If the touch is unresponsive, reset the Touch ID and reintall the front face camera flex cable, it will okay after you turn on your phone.

By 'reinstall' the front flex cable, do you mean just unplug it and plug it back it? Does the phone have to be off for this?

Yes, you should close your iPhone first. After you open your phone, release the battery connector then reinstall the front face camera flex cable.

I will leave it on 11.0.2 for now till I get more info on this new 11.0.3. Saying that it does say it is is a fix for home button probs but I dont have any, so do you or dont you Desisions decisions.

Edit: Updated to 11.0.3 2 days ago and everything is still working fine,.Conclusion: It could perhaps be cheap screens that are causing the problem or just your luck when buying a screen. I fitted a AAA screen about £10 -£15 more but in my opinion worth it.

found a solution for who dont have orignal screen and currently in 11. something that make touch screen not function currently.

turn off ur iphone 6s, and remove the 4 screws plate, unplug the the only vertical attachment which should be use for home button and front camera connection which also the one u didnt replace . after unplug this one, restart your phone. and this time make take while to come up, anyway once its on the touch screen should work fine now. and now its the time to plug the home button and front camera plug back in , and bang its all good !

let me know if it helped.

this is for aftermarket 6s screen replaced and reset for new phone or even updateing new ios. both worked fine for me. hope it save yours as well

The vertical connector does not control the camera in any way at all. It is Touch ID home button, back light and 3D Touch. This action can lead to loss of Touch ID functionality in a small number of cases. Also if you are not careful about unplugging the battery along the way it is easy to cause a short because this cable pulls a lot of juice for the backlight.

11.0.3 has seen a majority of 6S touch screen issues resolved. Updating should eliminate the problems.

による

yes. it was resolved by 11.0.3

thats purely for ppl like me who stuck in 11.02 and dont have original screen. and phone have been reset. lol worth trying when back in to a corner like this.
