Are MBA 2014 SSD and MBPr 2015 SSD exchangeable

I have a MacBook Air 2014 13" with 512GB SSD and have a MacBook Pro 2015 15" with 256GB SSD.

Looked up a little and noticed some questions about similar situations but there is none final answer on this.

PCIe M.2 interfaces are same on both devices, but Dan tells about a possible firmware difference.

If I could be sure then I will validate my warranty on MBPr to exchange two SSD.

Did anyone try this out? Thank you

Hey Dan, I did check both devices for NVMExpess information. Interestingly they both reads this computer doesn't contain NVMExpress device. To be honest I am a little shocked even my 2015 MBPr 15" doesn't contain NVMExpress. OK so I think they are both members of first generation Pci-e Type SSD that Apple used on their devices, and are replaceable. Right?

OK , so they are both 2 Lane PCIe. Now lets check the firmware look under SATA/SATA Express and paste them in for me to see.

Opps! The 1st image of the second set is messed up. Can you post a new one that we can read it.

Dan, Did you have a chance to check new images? I guess news are bad for me but I will give up when I hear the bad news from you :)

Sorry for the delay, I had to locate a system to double check. Sadly, they are not physically interchangeable.

Yes, Apple keeps us hopping ;-} So to be clear here you want to use an older SSD in a newer system.

Then yes you could have a firmware or compatibility issue here.

Apple altered the hardware from a 2 Lane PCIe to a 4 Lane PCIe blade SSD and has updated the firmware on the older SSD's a few times which also make it tough to say for sure if a given SSD will work.

So far from my limited experience I have found the newer firmware SSD's works on the older systems not the other way around as long as they are both the same series of SSD (i.e. 2 lane).

Compare the hardware specs & firmware revision between the SSD's by going the hardware profile service under About This Mac > System Report... button. Then look at the SSD's under NVMExpress section. Paste the screen shots here for us to see.

The last thing here is checking to make sure they are the same physical size. Pop off the bottoms so you can compare the physical size of the units. The older versions of the MacBook Airs used a narrow and long format board unlike the MacBook Pro's which used a wider shorter board.

As a side note: OWC has a tease message on their web site implying they will be offering upgrades soon for your system: OWC Upgrades for: Late 2013-Current MacBook Pro Retina

I am put a MacBook Pro 2015 apple ssd to a MacBook Pro 2014 since MacBook Pro 2015 apple ssd is about 3 or 4 times fast than the MacBook Pro 2014 apple ssd, I am installing the Big Sur on it and it worked.
