WIFI has no internet connection, self assigned IP

I'm working on MacBook 13" unibody machine.

I get the alert: NO internet connection, the WIFI card gets a self assigned IP starting with 169. I've changed the wifi card and wifi antenna's. Even on a fresh install I get the same issue, what could be the problem? Also the logic board fails to detect the battery intermittently.

Can you give us the last four digits of your serial number so we can correctly identify which model you have as there are quite a few in the MacBook line.

My access point support b,g,n. Every mac in my office can connect to my wifi but not this one. W89040XAQ5W6A

Can you check your serial number again (we only need the last four digits) I think you have a typo as I can'y find it in the EveryMac database.

its 5W6A, its a non-pro macbook 13". Its not my network. Bc this is the only machine that won't connect, I think its a logic board issue, but I don't know what to repair to correct it.

To start with what are you connecting to for your Access Point (AP)? Can you give us the make and model info.

You maybe encountering an issue with the configuration of it Vs your system. You see your MacBook may only have a 802.11g interface which means it needs to access a AP that can communicate with it (802.11g or 802.11n). The newer 802.11n MIMO and 802.11ac AP's may not be setup to allow your MacBook access.

Do you have a WiFi signal detector app installed like: WiFi Explorer on your MacBook? I would start there to see if your system is working at all.

UPDATE

Here's the IFIXIT guide for your system to get to the WiFi adapter: MacBook Unibody Model A1278 AirPort Card Replacement.

Have you tried using a WiFi detector app like I pointed out to you? If it does not see anything then I suspect the AirPort board is shot.

The only rub here is this is a big job to get to. You may want to see if you can find an external USB WiFi adapter as a cheaper solution.

The 2008 MacBook (Aluminum) also has a gigabit Ethernet connector. You can also see if it's possible to connect directly to the access point through an Ethernet cable (your network admin may need to OK this). If you can't get a routable IP address through DHCP using either WiFi or Ethernet, it's possible that it's a problem with your network drivers, rather than with the WiFi hardware.

What operating system are you using? Have you tried reinstalling the OS, or installing an upgrade? Have you tried any software repairs, such as booting off the recovery partition and repairing your boot volume with Disk Utility?
