@daveo52292 sounds like a bad battery. Of course, make sure that all of the phones settings are in battery saver mode. Also, close all background apps etc. If none of that works, you may need to try a new battery. Batteries right now are the biggest market for counterfeiting. There are so many old and damaged batteries being sold as new, that this happens quite frequently. I suggest you stay away from place like ebay, Amazon and Aliexpress for batteries.
