My guess is they wanted to download some apps to run tests on the device to make sure it worked perfectly, and Google Family Link didn't allow that. They may also potentially be using an app to pair the new screen to the phone, but I haven't seen anyone using something like that. I would allow it, but keep in mind that if you give them your password, they may be able to access sensitive information.
