Please refer to the pictures. I've seen this white stuff on the AC adapter and main board on every iMac of this generation I've taken apart. The imac in this example works fine, but seriously, what is it? The main board seems to have different patches of it. Scraping them off of boards that went kaput reveals a brown substance not unlike caked brown sugar or really old glue.
