The sound cable probably runs near the sensitive point you identified as being next to the track pad.   If you are up to it, try to open the case and check the wiring near the track pad.  What may be going on is the wire is being pinched and possibly shorting out.  You can find take apart guides for Asus here [[Topic:Asus Laptop]].   If you do find a pinch or bare wire on the sound cable then use thin tape as laptops have a tight fit.
