FitBit says that the battery is a nicad rechargeable that must be discharged to 20% of its' capacity before charging and but be used every day to obtain the 30 month expected life.  They only replace a unit that is less than 12 mos. old.  As yet, there is no way to change the battery even here on iFixIt.
