Replaced Game Card Reader, now Touchscreen doesn't work

I recently had to replace the game card reader in my Switch (2017 HAC-001) due to some bent and missing pins. I used this method and the fix kit from iFixit and the repair seemed to go well. The card reader works and we can play game cards again!

What wasn't apparent at first is that the touchscreen now has issues. Most of the time the Switch remains docked, but when undocking to go portable (from standby), the touchscreen doesn't function properly, registering ghost inputs, rendering the Switch inoperable. Thus far the only solution is to fully reboot the switch prior to undocking. After that, seems to work fine in portable.

This issue was NOT present prior to the repair. Now I see mixed explanations for this issue:

  • Some posts talk about a potential incompatibility between the Switch and the Card Reader (something about there being multiple versions of the card reader), which I feel is unlikely since after a reboot the issues goes away, AND I know with confidence I have the original HAC-001 model and ordered the appropriate part from iFixit.
  • Some posts says it may be as simple as the ribbon connecting the game card reader not being fully seated. While this would be great since I could just crack it open and reseat the ribbon, IMHO it still doesn't explain why the touchscreen works after a reboot.
  • Some posts says I should just use the custom bootloader Hekate to calibrate the touchscreen but I have some apprehensions going down the modded Switch route, this is a family console primarily used by my Wife and kids and I don't want to mess something up.

Any ideas? I'm hesitant to crack it open again without being reasonably sure it will resolve the issue.

Hi!

I repaired many Switches so far and I had the exact same issue. Found out that there are different versions regarding the game card readers. You definitely did NOT break something in there.

So, the touchscreen cable connects straight in the connector on top of the game card reader.

Since you do have Switch V1 and V2 touchscreen versions, I’m almost certain it’s related to this. Somehow 1 pin is acting different on there causing ghost inputs.

So, long story short: you got the wrong/incompatible game card reader. I read somewhere that you can solder a cable on there to stop the ghosting, but this comes with a risk. In my opinion: get the right game card reader.

I know that some sellers on AliExpress are advertising that their Game card reader works for both version (I did not tested this yet). But otherwise, check if the code matches and the board color. I’m not sure if there is another way how to tell which version it is…

Hopefully this answer will help you in the right direction.

Thanks for the reply! I was afraid of this answer lol, but I had a feeling it might be the case. I'm bummed since I thought I'd done my due diligence selecting the part from iFixit that corresponding to my V1 Switch... but what's done is done, LOL.

Since we have the workaround of shutting down the Switch prior to undocking it, I'll likely keep doing that, I'm disinclined to keep purchasing card readers in hopes I get the right one...

The Switch stays docked most of the time anyway. Thanks again for your insight!

Unfortunately this is the case :(. Gladly, it will read games all the times, even when you got the incorrect game card reader version. Happy that the workaround works for you :)! I totally understand that you will leave it the way that it is now.

Whenever you need to do a repair again, you could try the “all version supported card reader” and replace it.

Have a great day!

Welp turns out I was mistaken, I thought the touchscreen worked when the Switch was fully shut down prior to undocking, but turns out it isn't working at all anymore, just crazy ghost inputs. Looks Like I'm off to repair again! Thanks for your help

Edit: is this the part you mentioned? Nintendo Switch (2017 and 2019) Game Card Reader

Since it's for both versions?

Unfortunately you need to replace it, yes :(.

That one should work for all the versions, seems like it!

Also as example this one is: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/325680740...

As long as they are saying that it works for both, it should be good! Please keep us posted!

I replaced my screen and now have touch screen issues aswell, only the left 2cm work.

if i replace the Digitizer and Card reader with the available ones from ifixit, are they compatible?
