Switch Digitizer Troubles x4

Hoping I can find some help. This is starting to drive my crazy. I bought a replacement digitizer for my Nintendo switch and cannot seem to get one working. Every one I try recognizes touch inputs on the border of the screen but nothing in the middle. At first I thought it was just a bad part, but I have now tried three from amazon and one from iFixit. In order to narrow down the problem, every time I try a defective digitizer I also plug in my old one and test it as well. The old one has no problems other than a large scratch and sometimes reports ghost taps, other than that it will recognize touches on all parts of the screen. I’ve tried this several times now with four different digitizers. Please help! I’m going crazy

So it doesn’t really seem like we’ve found a working combination yet, I made a google spreadsheet so we can keep track of what has been tried and what works. Feel free to add your own attempts/info so we can track down what works! Link below:

**UPDATE** 9/24/20

Thanks to @metrons for finding a solution (works for non-patched switches). According to CTCaer on github (writer of Hekate), there are four versions of the switch digitizer. These are not cross compatible unless you re-calibrate your touchscreen using third-party software (e.g. Hekate). If you have an older non-patched switch, load Hekate and try the touchscreen calibration under “tools”. Make sure to use the latest version of Hekate, as only the newer ones have joy-con support allowing you to navigate to the calibration utility without touch. If the calibration fails, it most likely means you have a loose connection or the digitizer is trashed; try unplugging and reinserting the ribbon cable (worked for me).

I’m still hoping we can find a way to match digitizers for those with patched switches! Thanks for your help everyone!

Did replacing the game card board resolve the issue? I'm having the same problem.

Thanks!

@Christopher David Rodrigues Not yet :/ I’ve only tried it once so far. The card readers are a little harder to find than the digitizers. As far as I can tell the part was original not a knockoff. I’ll have to try it again.

@Cubby DeBry very interesting, i have a strong feeling its a compatibility issue with aftermarket parts. I have a a little more insight to share as im sure youre tired of putting money into it like i am lol!

With the aftermarket digitizer, it only recognizes touch on the left edge (about .5") and the right edge (about .75") and the top and bottom edges (only 0.1" tho)

HOWEVER, if i use an RCM jig and boot into Hekate (a custom recovery), touch input works completely. Leading me to believe that somehow the drivers in Nintendo's firmware arent compatible with aftermarket digitizers.

I think the only sure way to replace the digitizer is with an OEM digitizer, from another used device. So I'm keeping my eye out for a broken device for cheap.

Hope this helps in your quest.

@Cubby DeBry

P.S. My next idea is that possibly aftermarket parts were disabled by a patch in an update. I am going to try to downgrade from 8.1.0 down to an older update tomorrow and see if it works.

(Apple did this last year in iOS 11.3 and disabled all aftermarket digitizers.)

Did anyone ever find out how to fix this or what's going on?

Hello! I had the same problem that you are facing. My touchscreen was failing exactly on the same spots. I replaced the digitizer and the problem persists. After weeks of research I found a thread on the gbatemp forum that a person was having problems with the touch and he decided to recalibrate the touch through a custom bootloader (Hekate). In the tools tab in the lower right corner there is a tool to calibrate the touchscreen. I clicked on it and magically after the process my touch is 100% functional. Unfortunately, this fix is only for consoles that have access to the custom Hekate bootloader (which on newer consoles are blocked by nintendo). I hope this information helps people who are facing this problem.

I've put together a switch from parts, and had the same problem. Tried this today (and luckily the motherboard I got is not patched), and can confirm it works for me. Additional information: I got my digitizer/cartridge reader chip from some Chinese seller on ebay. I reckon this is indeed a region/compatibility issue since I kind of remember the seller mentioned "only compatible with US/Asia consoles" (the screen I got is from an European seller).

I've found out that a V1 digitizer doesn't work with a V2 cardreader. You also have to install a v1 cardreader are a universal from Aliexpress

I'm so amazed this works. I changed the digitizer twice, both times ordered from iFixit and I was baffled how I got two bad digitizers in a row. For anyone on macOS wondering the specific steps. You will need:

1) Nintendo Switch with display that only appears to be responsive around the edges and not the middle of the screen

2) A $6.59 "RCM Jig" from Amazon (search Amazon for B0CDGPBDDT)

3) A Mac with the Chrome browser installed (this does not work using Safari or Firefox)

4) A USB-C cable connected to your Mac (this works using a USB-A to USB-C cable if your Mac only has USB-C ports but is connected to a hub with USB-A ports)

5) A microSD card (tiny capacity is fine as you only need to put 2.3MB of files on it -- that's MB not GB); I used a 2GB card I had lying around

6) An SD-to-microSD adapter, so that you can insert the SD card into your Mac. If you don't have a Mac with an SD card slot, you'll need an SD-card USB adapter

It’s actually probably not a problem with the digitizer. It’s likely with the game slot. For some reason (I haven’t figure it out yet) when you install a new digitizer sometimes you have to put a new game slot in as well. Be careful here too though as I’ve seen a lot of bad game slots straight from the seller. Good luck

So some repair-service already tried to replace the digitizer on my Switch but didn’t do such a good job. When booting up, the Switch was having the ghost touch issue all over the screen, and you couldn’t push a single button (or touch anything). So I tried cleaning the dust between the digitizer and the LCD. Since that didn’t work out, and the switch was patched, I thought I’d try my luck with a new digitizer from China. And oh and behold it worked! So if anyone still has trouble finding a working digitizer for patched switches, I suggest checking out the Excel-spreadsheet again, I added it in there. Maybe it’ll work out for you too.

Hey guys. I'm having same issue but with the buttons. Home and capture always work but the rest just stop working when they feel like it until I do a reset. Which is fun when power only sometimes work. Would the same thing work for the buttons as it did for screen. Oh an I already tried remapping the buttons. Thanks a ton

Kind of disappointed that the possibility of this issue is not mentioned by ifixit on the store page for the digitizer. Not sure if fusee-gelee is patched or not but the Switch in question is a 2020 model and definitely is not running firmware 4.1.0.

Guys I'm having a similar issue, Amazon digitizer. Worked great till I put SD card back in and it restarted then had the issue described above. Took it back apart and plugged old one in (ghost inputs) and got nothing from it. Restarted with old one still plugged in and it worked again, plugged new one in and again it worked flawlessly until I reassembled and turned it back on. Did this a few times and now I have reassembled everything with touch screen input test up, still working great but haven't put the SD card back in or reset the device since getting the new digitizer to work again. Could this be the same v1, V2 issue described above? Seems to me like a software thing idk. This is my first switch and I'm giving it to my son for his birthday in a few days. Just weird how it will literally go from working fine to nothing with just a power cycle. Not sure which version I have but controllers are blue and orange. I haven't tried an actual game chip? Yet as I don't own any but the digital loads fine, can scroll through everything as it should. I don't want to keep taking it apart just to get the new digitizer to temporarily work or not be able to have storage expansion just to have touch screen. There's got to be an answer. I've seen the comments about 3rd party things that can calibrate the screen and seems like maybe thats what I need but I have no idea because again, I've never had or dealt with a switch before let alone trying to jailbreak one and install 3rd party stuff just to make this work. Any ideas?

This is just a shot in the dark, but I’m wondering if maybe the SD card keeps some calibration info on it or something. Have you tried rebooting with a fresh, blank SD card? Does the same thing happen rebooting without an SD card?
