How do you replace the CMOS battery?

Can you please make a guide on replacing the CMOS battery? I've done it once before using a youtube video that seems to have been taken down, and I don't remember the steps.

This video strips down to the motherboard and CMOS battery.

Hi @basementdax

Initially I thought that also, but when you look at the ifixit Gateway P-7805u RAM Replacement guide (Step.1 smaller image on right) there's no cmos battery next to the WiFi card as is shown in the video you linked - see 1:45 minutes into the video.

I've checked a lot of Gateway P-78_ _ models online and they're not all the same as far as where the cmos battery is. Some have the cmos battery plugged in (not battery holder type) on the underside of the motherboard which would require removal of the board.

Hopefully the OP will update where it is.

Cheers.

Yes that’s a good spot I didn’t notice that 👍 .

I wonder why the CMOS battery needs changing again they usually last a long time, years.

@basementdax

They're non rechargeable so 4-5 years is about usually all that they last that I've found. Most people don't even know there's one there in older laptops. In newer laptops the RTC function is supplied by a feed from the main battery so having to replace them usually doesn't arise

Gateway P-78 series started in ~2006 so having to replace the battery twice possibly in 18 years or so, is not too bad. At least they're still using the laptop ;-)

Yes makes sense I learn something everyday on here!

Yeah, mine's the plug in type too. I don't remember removing the motherboard to get to it though, and hence my question. I was hoping to avoid having to go that far, but I suppose my memory might be failing me. At this point, I might not even bother. The video card no longer supports the game I play on it most, so as nothing more than an internet browser, any custom settings I used are more or less irrelevant, and windows corrects the time. I bought and refurbished 3 newer Dells, and am happily boxing my favorite MMO's on them, with the gateway on fan sites showing me how to get from point a to b. Thanks for all the posts and trying to help.
