Want to install High Seriria or above on my optical bay SSD.

Have a mid 2012 Macbook pro (2.9ghz, 13inch) I have a 850 Evo in the optical drive. Whenever i try and install a new OS it crashes mid way through the install. (Currently running Seriria and have been for a number of years on the SSD)

I have tried a fresh install of the OS and formatting the SSD with no luck so far.

The original HD drive in the original bay has never shown up since I installed the SSD in the optical drive.

I suspect i need a new SATA cable but just want to check. Also would I need to change the SATA cable on the HDD and the Optical drive caddy SSD? Or just the HDD one?

Thanks

How big and full is your SSD?

You may want to make a backup of the drive and reformat the SSD. I don't recommend running anything higher than Sierra on SATA based systems as you can create corruptions in the drive due to the APFS file system. APFS is a very chatty dialog which struggles on older SATA based systems as SATA does not offer deep enough buffering unlike PCIe offers.

May stick to my current OS then. As I don't want to create for damage than good.

You should have the SSD in the main bay with the Mac OS installed onto there. Then on the secondary optical bay use the HDD there because it’s only SATA 2 on the optical bay if i remember correctly.

Ive used the SSD for years in the optical drive. Only having a problem now when I want a new OS for the security updates. Crashes on install no matter what.

@benjamen50 - The 2012 models can support a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive in the optical bay. As you can see in OWC Data Doubler listing. 2012 13" MacBook Pro = MacBookPro9,2

Read your previous posts Dan and have been very helpful. I presume I need a new cable but just wanted to check. Especially with my original HDD not showing up. Haven't seen someone else have that issue before. Thanks

@Sam B - Are you running the installer from your HDD drive? If you are then the HD bay SATA cable is the root issue here MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable follow this guide MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012ハードドライブケーブルの交換

You’ll also want to place a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase when the cable crosses over and you’ll want to use an old BIC pen ink straw (empty) to use as a forming brake to create nice round arcs where the cable needs to be bent. You don’t want sharp folds as that damages the cable.

No running OS on the SSD in the optical drive bay. Just had an installer on a USB stick after I wiped the SSD.

Time to reformat the drive ;-{

I know you don't want to hear this, time to roll back to Sierra.

さんによる

Yeah have already done this. Was just asking for if I was gonna attempt again. Thanks for your help.
