Screen Failure - options to diagnose the problem.

Hello,

I have a black screen on a macbook pro retina late 2013.

I already tried all the software fix like resetting NVRAM and SMC.

i’m trying to find a way to be sure it’s a harware failure from the screen.

The computer works fine since it’s booting and i can link it to a tv to see the desktop, so it’s not the graphic card either.

The computer got water spilled from the ceiling on the left side of the screen and it got all the way inside through the keyboard. The water quantity was very small, still the mac gave out instantly. Now it’s rebooting fine but without the screen.

I would like to find if the screen is done for good or if the connexion to the logic board is screwed. After opening the mac nothing seems to point that the logic board or the display cables have suffered.

I have a working screen from a mid-2012 macbook pro i could install for testing but i dont know if it’s compatible. On the Ifixit shop the two screens have 50 dollard of price difference, although it has the same spec, also i dont want to mess with my working macbook.

I know i could launch the apple diagnosis but it seems i cant make it display on another screen via HDMI.

Any ideas to rules out possibilities ?

Hi, I got the same issue.

MacBook a1278

black screen, no spills or ever been dropped.

done all of the usual resets, but pressing keyboard combinations, works fine with external display and I can see the screen when I shine a light at the back on the logo, could this be just a faulty fuse, at one stage I was thinking it was the lcd cable connector or the screen it self, but I guess if it was, my screen would not have any images.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello, seem to me that your backlight circuit might be at fault. When i got that problem i tried all i could to find what it was exactly was at fault on the motherboard, i was sure it was the backlight fuse ! well, how naive of me ! when i checked it with a multimeter it was fine, just fine.

Actually you need some real skill and understanding to exactly find real problems, and at some point, i just putted everything in looking for a real reparator with the right tools, not some software fixer that you can find at every streetcorner.

Actually even with that i couldnt make it fixed, since in my case, more that just the backlight circuit was screwed in the end.

In your case it could be just the fuse, or not at all ! Anyway even if it's just the fuse, replacing half a milimeter component is just too risky to do yourself with a big ass soldering iron. You could find the right tools somewhere like a hot air station, but even then you could also find someone who is proficient in using it too.

Shine a flashlight behind the screen where the apple logo is.

On a certain angle of flashing the light you should be able to make out some text / image on the screen. If you can see it but very dim that would indicate that the MacBook has a no backlight fault.

In this case I would leave the macbook turned off, open up the macbook with the bottom cover removed and unplug the battery to prevent further damage from water ingress as the longer it’s left untreated the damage will most of the time get worse and more components would need to be repaired.

After removing the bottom cover inspect the display connector which is located at the top right hand side of the logic board for any liquid damage. You will have to remove the board to look in more detail on where the liquid may have went.

There is a link here on general liquid damage cleaning but I don’t have the bookmark for it here, someone else will most likely post it here.

Might not be too late to clean so you may want to try some 99% Isopropyl Alcohol brushing to remove some corrosion, take photos of where the corrosion is before cleaning it off because sometimes it may need more than just cleaning.

Thanks for your tip, you were right about flashlighting behind the screen, it's effectively a backlight failure ! Also i already had opened the lower case and i didnt find any traces of damage on the connexions. I removed completly the screen and it looked fine. Also the water spill was from severals days ago, the mac was brought to me from a friend so i could look into it.

Edit : Ok i'm going to remove the logic board to see its dark side ;)

Edit2 : I removed the logic board, there is no visible sign of damage, maybe under the heatsink...

OK i think i've found what's the problem is. The backlight fuse is surely screwd, need to solder a new one.

Replacing just the fuse won't fix it. You'll need to find out what cause the fuse to blow in the first place. The backlight circuit is most likely shorted to ground right now so if you replace the fuse it'll just blow again.

Once you find out what is causing it and remove the short circuit and replace components in backlight at fault if any then that will fix the problem and that's when the fuse should be replaced.

The board number is 820-3662. You can use this number to search for schematics and board view to diagnose this at circuit level.

Many thanks for your support. I'll keep that in mind, i'll try to find a multimeter somewhere and test the board.

Since i cant find any visible damage, isn't there a chance that the tiny amount of water made the short a one time thing that blowed the fuse ? Seriously i returned the board for hours to find any traces of water and corrosion. I didnt see the actual water coming inside the laptop, my friend told me that a drop came from the ceiling, landed on the left side of the screen and then came inside by the air opening on the left.

the water must have gone next to the power and display cable. But there is no trace of any damage in this area, that's why i'm thinking it "could" be just the fuse that broke at that one time. Anymore thought ?
