Is SSD intallation possible?

I have a mid-2010 iMac. Can I replace the 1TB hard drive with a SSD? If so, will there be a noticeable difference in performance?

Yes! Putting in a SSD or even a SSHD will offer better performance. As well as putting in more RAM.

But before you make the jump think about the investment. How long are you going to hold on to this system.

You’ll either need to swap out your current drive out or give up your optical drive (you can still reuse it in an external case)

You do need to stick with a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) compatible drive. Many of the drives now on the market are fixed SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) which won’t run in your system. Seagate’s 3.5” SSHD’s & Samsung 860 SSD’s are auto sense drives which will match up to the systems SATA ports I/O speed. Review the spec sheet of the drive if it does not state it don’t use it! As an example review this spec sheet Seagate FireCuda SSHD note the interface line 6.0/3.0/1.5 which are SATA III, II & I data rates (Auto Sense).

@danj Are SSHDs be slower than the SSDs?

Yes, a hybrid drive (SSHD) is slower! But ...

Think how you drive your car your cruise at a set speed and when you need to pass a car you step on the gas to pass that car.

So we don't need to rev the engine all the time, thats also true with your drive. So a hybrid drive maybe powerful enough to get us over the rough spots where we need the speed of a SSD, yet have the deeper storage of a traditional HDD. As it turns out the drive is also a higher RPM drive 7200 so it's not as slow as the older 5400 drive you have in your system.

So the issue gets into the cost for the given size of the storage you are looking for.

If you can I would just add the SSD using the dual drive carrier. Then you can keep your HDD for your stuff, but use your SSD for the boot drive and hold your apps with the rest of the drive held for virtual RAM, caching and paging use. Here we can use a smaller sized drive.

If your HDD has died then going with a SSHD might make the best sense. If you go with a SSD you'll need a larger drive than the dual drive setup.

How much would a dual drive install package be?

Review the dual drive link above for the steps and how to order the carrier. You'll still need a drive. I assume you want to go with an SSD, 256 GB is what I would go for and I would make it the boot drive and how just your apps. Leave 1/3 of the drive empty for V-RAM, Caching & Paging.

I went with the dual drive option and everything turned out great!

The MacOS, Applications, etc are on the SSD 250 GB and all my documents, music, and pictures are on the original 1TB HD. Everything is faster!

What should I do with the Applications and MacOS that is still on the HD?
