Certain Keys not Working

I’ve received a Mid 2010 13” MacBook Pro from a friend, and the 7 key seems to not work.

I was wondering what you’d recommend trying before replacing the keyboard assembly.

I was also wondering if the keyboard for a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro of the same size would connect to the logic board, as they have the Launchpad key, instead of the dashboard key, and that’s what I prefer.

Thank you in advance

Switching out keyboards won't alter the keys function. It's the programing of the keys assignment. Go to the Keyboard control panel and click on the Shortcuts tab. You can set the Fn keys to what you want.

Thank you for that, although I was hoping for recommendations before replacing the keyboard assembly, since I don't want to go that deep into a repair if it could simply be resolvedly cleaning underneath the key, for example.

Sorry, no magic here a bad key is often corrosion damage from a liquid spill. You'll need to fully remove the keyboard to get to the point you can clean the spill and fi even possible patch the line thats bad. Are often the break is within the switch blister which you can't get into without killing it, hence the need for a new keyboard.

No problem, just thought I'd ask.
