My WIFI keeps dropping unexpectedly

Recently purchased an Acer Nitro 5 and out of the box it has a small issue, the wifi connection without warning will drop for no apparent reason. The connection is strong and my other computers and devices have no problem connecting and staying connected. I am not quite sure if this is a common problem or if it is just me but either way I would love to be able use the computer as intended and without having to check if the computer has disconnected from my wifi every 5 minutes.

Have you try the laptop on other wifi network??????

さんによる

Hi @thespacebutt ,

Does it happen if you have the laptop right next to the WiFi router?

さんによる

yes i have tried both suggestions

さんによる

it is still dropping unexpectedly

さんによる

What you can do is go to the settings on your control panel and go to WiFi settings and reset your WiFi settings which will clear all passwords for WiFi entered but should help to stop the situation from recurring.

Hope this helps

Alright I'm back after a year, (sorry for the long wait time, I more or less forgot about this issue) I figured out about a week or two after the initial post, it wasn't the computer, and it wasn't the wifi, the issue was me. I wear a gear S2 watch (with a magnetic band) on my left hand. The place where I rest my hand is affected by the magnetic field from the magnet on the watch band, this would also cause my computer to randomly shut off, the problem was most prevalent when I was traveling with the nitro 5 (as I would almost always have the watch on while traveling) long story short the left side of the nitro 5 (on the wrist resting spot) is highly sensitive to any magnetic interference and causes numerous problems (luckily nothing permanent)

Do you think having a Macbook Pro sitting next to my Acer Swift 3 can have the same effect? Sometimes the Acer will drop wifi!

Hi @thespacebutt ,

Few things to look at and try:

Check in Device Manager (right click Windows Start button, left side of Taskbar)> Network Adapters > right click on WiFi Adapter for your laptop> Properties > Power Management if computer can turn off power to device. Uncheck the box > Apply > OK.

Try installing a WiFi scanner program to check on the signal strength of your network and see if it varies a lot on your laptop. Remember that it is a -ve value, so the higher the dBm figure the lower the signal strength.

Also check if you are on a “congested” (or popular) channel that may be causing interference, (lots of nearby networks on the same channel).

I realize that other devices work OK on your network but am now beginning to wonder if perhaps you may have a problem with the WiFi adapter/antenna in your laptop.

Hi! I had the same issue as you, but it was not due to a magnet. Since this is the first post that kept popping up in my searches and I difficulty diagnosing, I’d like to include this solution here for other people who are having the same issue as myself. It seems to be that there is some glitch with how the Windows 10 Hotspot feature works with Acer computers:

My Acer Aspire E5 576G laptop kept dropping and reconnecting every 15-30 seconds or so. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi then scroll down to ‘Hotspot 2.0 networks’. Toggle the switch for ‘Let me use Online Sign-Up to get connected’ to ‘Off’. My internet has worked since.

Awesome.. this worked for me.. seamless.. :) .. thank you

This seems to have worked for me too, thank you soo much!! Acer laptop has been intermittently dropping wifi since I bought it a year ago or so but seems to get worse over time. I called into Acer several months back and they had me do some weird paperclip reset thing which worked for awhile but eventually just reverts back to dropping wifi. I can't thank you enough for this simple solution.

Thanks I think this has solved my issue of having to restart several times to get the wifi to work

Are you able to connect and stay connected if you use an Ethernet cable? If so, then connect that way when it is convenient.

In order to fix the problem, go into Device manager, and do an update on the driver for the Wifi device. Hopefully that will fix it.

Since your computer is brand new, you should be able to get warranty coverage for this issue. In the meantime, you could get a USB wifi adapter. Some of them are so small that you can barely see them while they are plugged into the USB port. Here is one that you won't even notice when it is plugged into your USB port:

https://www.amazon.com/Edimax-EW-7811Un-...

I have no idea how well it works; but the benefit of this one is that it stays completely out of the way when it is plugged in. But such a small adapter might not get a very good signal. In fact, some of the comments say that this is a problem with this adapter.

I have this adapter:

https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-N300-Wi-F...

It works very well. You can move the adapter around to get the best signal, because it has a USB extension cable and a stand. Or, you can plug it directly into the computer, which may mean that you won't get as good of a signal.

A USB wifi adapter is a good thing to have around. You can use it if your built-in wifi fails, or if you don't have a wifi adapter in your computer and there is no Ethernet connection to plug into.

Hi Colton,

My first impression would be that your WiFi access point is having troubles dealing with too many devices.

How many devices are you using? And have you considered giving the laptop a static IP address in your modem / access point to make sure it's not an IP issue?

It may be the range error of your wifi device and if more that the limit of wifi device other devices are connected using wifi it may happen with you that you drop wifi connection. you can also go for clearing temporary files and cookies. hope it will be helpful to you

The first thing to try is to identify if there is a compatibility or IP range issue with the network or if it is the device itself.

Take the device to a friends house (who preferably has a different brand of router) or a public Wifi at a coffee shop and use it for a while. If it drops while on other Wifi networks, it is not you it is the device. Otherwise, if it works fine there, it could be a strange compatibility issue between the device's WiFi chipset and your WiFi's chipset, (rare) or an issue where more than one device is trying to use the same IP address etc.

Just tried that and it still drops unexpectedly and without warning.

That means the issue is with your device, not your home WiFi.

Hi there Shreya !

I have the same problem with my Acer laptop WIFI dropping Unexpectedly. the only thing I didn't try is to reset my laptop. But you can try to completely remove the Wireless driver from the device Manager, here is how to do it.

Here the steps to completely remove a Device off your laptop.

Step 1. Use shortcut keys Win + X on Windows 10.
Step 2. Select Device Manager.
Step 3. Expand the entry Network adapters. Right-click the problematic device and select Uninstall device.
Step 4. You may need to check the option Delete the driver software for this device, and then click the Uninstall button.
Step 5. Reboot the computer.

Turn laptop back on and let Windows automatically re-detected the wifi hardware and automatically re-installing fresh copies of the wifi drivers.
