When plugging into the usb ports, a popup window says it has been disabled because a device is using too much power. I've tried resetting the SMU, PRAM, disconnected the battery for 10 minutes. Nothing works. The only other advice I've read is that the logic board may need to be replaced.
What can I do short of replacing the logic board.

Hello Ben....as u see below, there are two different SMC resets. It depends on wether u have a removable battery or not.
Reset the SMC of a MacBook or MacBook Pro’s with detachable batteries:

Make sure that you are performing the correct SMC for your machine. If this doesn't work; I would create a new user account and see if the problem persists, before jumping into a repair. If this doesn't help; you might need to replace the I/O Board of your machine.

I believe resetting SMC Helped resolve the issue of that error coming up for me too. In my case I had plugged a 4K LG monitor into my 2019 Macbook using a USB-C cable (Which is powered) while my laptops power brick was still plugged in. This caused the LG Monitor to go black for about 5 seconds, but then the picture came back. The warning notification then came up. I thought nothing of it and went about my day, soon thereafter though I had a DAC plugged into the monitor Via one of the USB 2.0/3.0 ports in the back and it worked at first, but repeatedly would stop working and throw the USB Ports / low power error. At this point I only had the data cable plugged into the DAC and not the charging cable. Just a thought, it could have been that the DAC itself, which has battery power, was running low was the cause of the issue. I wouldn't think that would be the cause though because I only had the data cable in and it did not register as low battery. Regardless I plugged the DAC back in to both USB 3.0 ports in the back of the monitor (One for charging, and one for data), reset the SMC and everything seems to be working now. Ultimately I think it was the act of plugging in both power sources at the same time that caused a power surge and tripped the issue. P.S. I held down the keys but got no indication it actually reset.
I have a a hooked Dell 3219Q and somehow I have a dead USB C.

Hey everyone,
I tried resetting SMC as well both ways and still nothing.
Odd thing is that my usb ports work for everything EXCEPT my “Focusrite Scarlett” interface for recording music in logic.
Anybody else have this similar problem??

Different ports have different power levels. Try the other ports

Mayer, Thanks for the answer. I'veonly 2 ports and tried both, switched different connections. took out the battery again, reset the SMU again. PRAM several times. nothing worked.Also there is very little in the apple support forum about this,but a lot of apple users have this same problem. Again any suggestion or answer is appreciated.
Help me learn here. What do you mean that different usb ports have different power levels? On PC's they are all 5.5Vdc.
ABCellars...Not all USB Ports are powered the same. I provided the documentation to prove this a few months ago; can't seem to track it down. But Mac's and PC's have self-powered USB ports that are powered by and "internal hub", but that's usually one port out of two in laptops. And usually the "powered USB " ports are usually in the front of a desktop, and the back ones are not.
I even provided a diagram which showed which USB ports were powered on specific machines. It was in one of my questions....I'll try to track it down.

Thank you all. I tried all of the above and still could not get the USB port to recognize any device. The original device that fried the port was an RC helicopter that came with a USB charging cord. When plugging in an external hard drive or a usb flash drive or other usb devices the device itself will show a light to show that there is power, but the Finder and/or desktop will not recognize the device so I can't click or use the finder to open or move it. Anyone have amy more ideas before I have to plunk down a few hundred dollars for a new logic board you think? I assume this is the same as the I/O board that was mentioned in the previous comment.

My mouse has been working for ages and suddenly my mac does the same thing i tried different mouses none of them works and pops up "unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable usb devices" whats happening!

Hey Raul, I saw your comment earlier then I spent about 30 mins on the phone with Apple Support...they told me to try:
1)Starting my computer in Safe Mode (shutting down, then starting up while holding down the Shift Key)
2.) Open up a Test User (go to System Preferences/Users and do a Test User and then restart and enter in using the Test User)
3.) Do some kind of drive restart (not sure the name actually) but to do it by shutting down, then holding down Option/Command/the R and P key for 20 seconds, and if it tries to restart while you are holding down, keep holding, and if it tries to start again a 2nd time, then to let go and let it reboot.
I did the 1st step and it worked! Just wanted to lend help on what worked for me. Cheers from Lima, Peru!

I have an Macbook Air and I am having the same problem, getting the message USB Accessories Disabled, but I have nothing connected, it started yesterday and the last thing I connected was my iPhone 2 days ago ...
I tried the solutions above (reseting SMC, PRAM, safe mode), none of them seems to work, when I use it on normal mode still have the message.
Any ideas/solutions?

This worked for me: When the message appears don't unplug the cable from your Macbook/Pro. Do it from the hard drive (regardless the message) wait a few seconds then plug it again.
It worked perfectly for me.
What if you’re getting this on your iMac (desktop)?
I have a mid-2011 iMac and getting the toaster message '“USB Accessories Disabled. Unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable USB devices.”
I have no idea what accessories it is referring to, all i have plugged in is keyboard and two ext hard drives which have been fine for the previous 2 years.

Nope - didnt work. No ports makes it useless to what i need this mac for. What’s going on with the quality of these in the past 5 years in here? I only use it for business matters so nothing major and it still has stuff going wrong…so strange. My old mac lasted me for like 8 years. Replaced it and this is my second in 4 years so not happy to see them breaking down so easily. Hope they can fig out why this is happening. Will check back in hopes of another solution other (other than a board replacement). Don’t have time to have my computer in a shop for a couple of weeks…bummer

I have a mac book air from maybe 8 years ago but it works fine until today. I had my huion pen tablet plugged in and the usb accessory is using too much power message popped up. Anything other than the pen tablet seems to work so i don’t know what’s happening. Would be grateful for any help. Thanks!

The same thing was happening to me as i was researching the answer. None of the solutions such as Shut down Mac, hold Command option shift and power button or command option P R and holding power button for 20 sec helped.. meanwhile my mac was on charge and about 40% full... as i was researching, it suddenly switched to the external display (which is the problem for me) by itself (it was plugged in all the time) once the charge reached 50%... its strange because i haven't read about it on any apple website or support forum and i checked all of them. this is how i resolved it . macbook pro 2016 touchbar 13inch.

Very different animal! Yours is likely having issues with its Hall sensors where the magnet in the lid is not being seen.

Just started having this problem on my 2017 Macbook Air with the left USB port. Resetting SMC and NVRAM does nothing. However, when I boot into Safe Mode, the USB port works. I’ve wiped the system several times and reinstalled the OS, and that pop up window still comes up (even with nothing inserted in the port).
Anyone have an idea on what to try?

What device are you trying to hook up to your USB that is giving you this error? What other USB devices are attached to the Laptop? What is the amperage rating for each of these devices?

I had a similar problem but I was using a USB dongle to adapt USB-B to USB-C. It turned out I had too many things plugged in and fried the dongle. I got a new one and everything works fine now.
