No power after battery replacement

I recently dropped my phone in a pool. My phone would go in to recovery mode but only if connected to power. The display was working (showing the itunes icon).

I replaced the battery but nothing showed up on the screen. My computer will recognize the phone but there is no response from the phone. I did not disconnect the screen when replacing the battery and I made sure not to damage the ribbon cables.

I also tested the old battery with the same result. The only thing I can think of is that I dropped the screws to the metal lcd panel so I cannot connect it but a new screw set is coming so I will be able to connect it later.

Why is my phone not turning on?

Is the metal lcd panel required to turn it on?

@mrtubbo "didnt try to charge it until a few days later and I replaced the battery. Now the screen wont turn on" enough time to have the corrosion process start and possibly create more short circuits. As you probably found out already, rice is not a solution. Check on here for more info on that. It is the equivalent of doing nothing, the only thing that happens is that corrosion will continue. So I'd be not using that anymore.

From here on you can only give it a try by treating it just like any other water damaged device. Start off by turning it off, do not try to turn it on, to charge or to sync it. This could potentially make a bad situation worse since it could shorten more components on the logic board out. Disassemble your phone by using this guide. Clean your phone with 90%+ (or better) isopropyl alcohol. Use this guide to clean your phone. It was written for an iPhone 3G but all the steps are pertinent to your phone as well. Inspect your board for any missing or damaged components. You must remove all the EMI shields to clean the board. Once properly cleaned, replace the battery and Lightning connector, then reassemble and re-evaluate. since you already changed the battery, you want to change it again and check the battery connector and the small components around it. Make sure that they are all still present. It is possible that you only have a damaged dispaly assembly but at this point anything will only be a guess. Water damage is the hardest to diagnose and to repair since almost any part can have failed.

Damage is most certain around battery connector and majority under metal shields - data could be rescued in cca. 75% but 100% functionality of the phone almost never. Disconnect the battery ASAP and stop charging - your phone is already in Short circuit state so if you want to rescue any personal info from it - STOP USING IT and disconnect all cables

Thanks but when my phone was dropped in the pool I didn't have the proper equipment to open it so I had to leave it in rice for a few days.

OMG... again with this rice. Rice is doing NOTHING... it is the same if you put your phone on nuts, rocks, marbles... come on already. If you are not able to open it... DON'T EVEN TRY TO CHARGE - because the battery is definitely shorted if water penetrated through. and again ... legend of MIGHTY RICE is explained very nice on Jessa (iPad Rehab) Youtube demonstration.

I didnt try to charge it until a few days later and I replaced the battery. Now the screen wont turn on and it turned on before.

If you dropped your phone in water it is most likely that your phone 's motherboard is fried. The phone is trying to recover itself. You should probably say goodbye to your phone because Apple doesn't fix water damaged phone.
