Digitizer replaced, sudden backlight problem

Hi folks!

I got an ipad mini 2 with a cracked screen. Before replacing the screen i read through all the information i could find about what to whatch out for when replacing digitizer, so i went ahead and replaced the digitizer making sure i disconnected the battery before i removed the LCD and digitizer cable. But when sealing the digitizer i noticed lcd was not working as it should. Before sealing i tested and it worked...

Here is what i did:

Removed cracked glass--> Lifted LCD and shield-->removed small shield-->Disconnected battery then LCD and digitizer cable-->Connected new digitizer and the LCD, then the battery-->put the shields on and was ready to seal the ipad. I tested that everything worked and everything did work--> Sealed the ipad making sure i folded the digitizer cable correctly. But then i noticed the LCD backlight was not working. I manage to get the backlight back for few seconds by soft reset but it happened only once.

I have re-pluged the LCD,digitizer and battery cable but still no backlight.

As far as i can see i have(at least i think) done everything correctly so not sure why the backlight did not work after sealing with the new digitizer. Also i read some information about that with ipad mini 2 it was not so easy to blow the backlight?

Any help/tips would be very appreciated :)

Sounds like you've done a lot of great research on this repair. You're right, the mini retina is NOT as sensitive at the backlight filter as the mini original. If you're having trouble, the most likely case is probably damage to the LCD itself. Sometimes people don't take it all the way out (i.e. razor cutting the tape that secures it at the bottom) This leads to a lot of handling of the LCD and can lead to LCD breakage. The LCD itself is pretty finicky.

Reseating ZIF connectors can be difficult, because you're not sure if you have gotten the ZIF connector to seat properly. You may want to look on the LCD again to see if there are any dark splotches on the white backlight or if the LCD end of the cable is working. While the backlight itself may not be easy to damage, the circuit boards in many displays are very fragile. I broke one just by touching it! If that doesn't fix it and you're at the point of eternal desperation, then you may want to get a new LCD (iPad mini 2/3 LCD) and try that. If that doesn't fix the problem, you may also may want to inspect the logic board for any signs of corrosion. Hope this helps!

Sejin---you keep posting about zif connectors. Please look up what a zif connector is, the iPad mini does not have zif connectors for the LCD. If you're not familiar with the device, don't answer---it just confuses people.

Sorry, I was thinking of the wrong type of connector, but that still uses the flip lock mechanism.

Hi

Got some good news:)

I disconnected battery, Digitizer and the LCD for 5 hours-->Cleaned the connectors/cables and reconnected everything-->Toke a hard reset-->The LCD came on and is now working perfectly!!! :)

What can have solved the issue:

1. Taking out the battery for few hours

2. Cleaning the cables and connectors(blow with air etc)

3. On the LCD there is a cable in a clip on the right side when looking at it from back side. This might be loose and just gently putt presser on the clip.

4. Putting all the screws on the big shield

5. The LCD cable might not be fully attached as you might think. You should feel it with you finger that it clips in to place when you press it down on the connector. After taking out the battery for 5 hours and putting the LCD back, i felt that the cable this time did connect all the way as i could not feel the same the other times, so probably me not clicking the cable in to place good enough.

The ipad is working great except for the smart cover switch which i believe is because there were no magnet on the homeflex for the replacement digitizer i got. However the customer did not care for that and is happy.

I am happy for fixing this and even more happy for having ifixit community who helps out quick, so thank to everyone helping out:)

Have a nice day
