The camera turns off by itself once I stop using it, why does this keep occurring?

The camera might be overheating or the battery(s) need to be replaced. Is the camera hot anywhere on touch?

You did say that it turns off when you stop using it, that might already be a feature automatically to turn off the camera when not in use. Computers also do this if they are set to, they will go to sleep once a set amount of time has passed. Try checking the manual if your able to disable or stop auto shutdown.

my camera viewfinder turns off and on....do I have it in a mode that causes this? Trying to take a picture and the viewfinder is shut down...help

My camera (Canon 700D) when in video mode switches the LCD display from live view (video live view) to the image settings (view finder mode) to the camera live view mode (still images) randomly and without me touching any buttons, often mid way through a recording. Any ideas?

Hi

I had this issue with a Thinkpad i7, this was following a Win 10 sw update. The thing was going on and off every 2 secs or so. Did all the diagnostic stuff to no avail. Went into the devices screen / camera this gives option to update driver tried to update but advised was running latest driver. The other option was to roll back the driver which I did despite the ms warning against doing this. This solved the problem and the camera is working fine now. It would seem the latest win 10 camera driver has issues with some hardware. MS sort this out!

The camera battery may not be installed correctly or may be low in power and need recharging. If this does not do the trick, your auto power off setting may be in use. Check out this troubleshooting page on details how to turn off this setting.

Try the following:

  • Make sure the battery is charged and turn on the camera.
  • Wait till it turns off.
  • Press the shutter button half way.

If the camera turns on again, you're dealing with the auto power off feature. The camera will turn itself off to conserve battery power if you don't operate it for a set time period. Simply pressing the shutter button half way will turn the camera back on.

You can change the time-out period, or disable auto power off altogether, through the camera's menu, as follows:

  1. Press the [MENU] button
  2. Use the Main Dial (the wheel next to the shutter button) to select the Tools tab (the fifth tab)
  3. Select the Auto Power Off menu item with the Quick Control Dial (the wheel on the back of the camera), press the [SET] button (the button in the center of the wheel).
  4. Use the Quick Control Dial to select the Auto Power Off time-out you want, or disable the feature by selecting [Off], then press the [SET] button.
  5. Press the shutter button halfway to exit the menu.

The procedure is illustrated on page 42 of the (English language) manual.

If you don't have the manual, you can get it in pdf format here.
