Power button won't put device to sleep

I have ran into a few iPad Minis now where the power button will not put the device to sleep. I have replaced the power flex cable and still have the same result.

If you hold the button down the device will power on or off like normal. Just the sleep function doesn't work.

Any ideas?

I can't find that in the options.

I'll update iOS and see if that helps.

Hi, i Found a solution. There is a soldring point for a sensor (near the home button or on left hand side when ipad dizitizer front side is down). when you used after market dizitizer on that there is no sensor there is blank space. so what have to do now if you can't put sensor over there, just wet your fingre little bit and clean then touch on blank soldering point, when you touch there your device will wake and sleep by touching when its wake by touching there then just go to setting > screen brightness > then only option will come for (power button) (Lock/Unlock) by on/off that your ipad mini power button will work start again as it was working before. but don't update it without backup other wise you have to do this again. Thanks, If you don't understand anything by this post you can contact me or ask me here.

Thanks

Great help, fixed the same issue I had, thanks

さんによる

this is not working for me. the power button is NOT responding at all.

thanks

さんによる

Hello Everyone, It's an issue only with Flex. Because that sensor is on only the part who detects the Flip cover and if sensor is not on flex then obvious On/off Function will not shown up on the screen in settings.

It's work like if Your Computer has wificard or any other device then it's only shown at Device manager because computer knows that There is a device attached to me if not then computer not gona show anything.

Same as there if sensor is there then it's shown otherwise you have to Decompressed or Short a Sensory memory Supply. So system will Show on/off button

Thanks. This is genuine Way and easiest. If you find other please Share.

Did you try to toggle the "lock/unlock" button under Settings>General>Lock/Unlock?

EDIT: as odd as it sounds, it is usually a bad quality digitizer (outer glass) assembly. Get a good one from a reputable seller and it will be fixed.

The home button circuit is interfacing with a circuit built into the digitizer assembly. A bad quality or defective assembly will therefore cause the power ON/OFF button to stop working.

Ok, let me know if it helped. This happens sometimes after the digitizer has been replaced.

さんによる

I'm not seeing that option?

さんによる

As Jessa said, the screen assembly is defective and generally of poor quality. The home button flex cable is poorly soldered.

さんによる

Man..Rany, you are a good guy, haha, it helped me to solve by going to general settings. Thank you !

さんによる

I had this happen to me on a full size iPad 2. I'm not sure where the smart cover sensor is located on this device, but this issue is happening after I replaced the Power/Volume Flex and the Digitizer/Front Panel Assembly.

Sorry I missed this question for a few days. This is a problem with soldering at home flex. Yes, home flex. It is common with the aftermarket digitizers. Get a new original quality digitizer and it will solve.

No, for sure, magnets are completely optional. Their only function is to secure the Smart Cover which would otherwise fall away when the iPad was held vertically.

What odd behavior have you noticed?

さんによる

I thought of the magnets first, replacing them had no affect.

I tried 2 different digitizers bought from 2 different vendors, same thing.

I have a ton of OEM IC chips and home flexes. I just don't see where that would affect the power button? The power button connects on the top right side, while the home/digi flexes connect at the bottom of the main board.

さんによる

Josh--iFixit forum likes you to post updates to your original question, or you could post as a comment under my answer above to help folks follow a conversation. But yes--as strange as it may sound, the top power button line runs through the home flex at the bottom of the main board. If you have some OEM ic's and home flexes, then why not just replace a home flex on one of your digitizers with an OEM home flex? If you do a careful soldering job then it will work.

My iPad mini 2's power button will not work! It's very strange because it can shut down the iPad or take screenshots also the sleep/wake button rarely works! Can someone help?

If you have a low quality Chinese screen you could try this. It worked for me on an iPad mini 2.

Go to settings

display and brightness

Lock/unlock.

Toggle the switch to off ( no green visible).

And that's it.

As a second fix, it also allows apps to be deleted where before they could not even though the X in the top left was present.

thanks mate! worked wonders!

Hi everybody,

Just want to say a huge thanks for the above contributions... and huge thanks to ranysaba@me.com

I was on the same problem that the power button not responding to the short press to enter sleep mode/ wake. It will work only for "the slide to power off" option. But I noticed that after specific time it is going to sleep mode. So I realised it is definitely a setting.

I have done all the things saying to do in the hardware side like covering with tapes, new flex cable, etc, etc

None worked for me

THIS IS JUST THE SETTING OF YOUR IPAD. ( mine is the ipad mini4)

'''GO TO SETTING

-> GENERAL scroll down to

->LOCK/ UNLOCK'''

flip that bullet to make sure it is off. Now try..

The power button will work as normal. it is nothing wrong with the new screen or digitizer you replaced.

if the home screen is not showing up at all even through home button and power button then it is definitely the small sleep wake sensor. you may forget to transfer it to your new digitizer. check it

Now the software update is making me crazy that unable to verify update.

if you have any suggestions please share it

Thanks

There is no lock/unlock option on the iPad mini4 underSettings/General

さんによる

This solved my problem. Replaced a screen on an iPad Mini 5 and everything worked but the sleep function on the power button. Long press to power off the device would work but short press would do nothing. At first I was worried I maybe damaged a flex but I did everything you said and toggled the "Lock/Unlock function" to off and now it works fine! Apparently this function is to be toggled on if you're using a magnetic case, so the device sleeps automatically when you close the case. Go figure. Thanks again!

さんによる

@gstan I found it under "Display & Brightness" in settings

This is caused by incompatible power flex cable. you will notice this when you see the smart cover function not working after you install a new flex cable. If you notice so then you will not be able to reset the device and add another iTunes account as when you reset iPad and while setting up as new the iPad will not recognize the smart cover function and the worst part is the smart cover function will be turned on deactivating the power switch sleep function. If you happened to see the smart cover function not working then make sure to keep a backup of iPad so that you can restore when needed. The other option is to replace the flex cable with smart cover function which is kind of hard to find.

Hi guys, I have a slightly different issue. The sleep/wake stops working when in press down the new screen in place. Then when I lift just the top portion of the screen the sleep/wake works fine? Screen goes back down and it stops working, lift screen and it's fine?! I'm very baffled by this. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance for any help!

How to restore?

Go to 'General' --> 'Reset' --> 'Erase All Content & Setting'

after that ipad will restart n setting back, choose restore from iCloud.

Good Luck ✌️

Cover the home button area (exposed metal) with insulated tape! An iPad mini 4 was acting erratically after I replaced the assembly and moved the home button to the new screen. I figured out that the home button had a little exposed metal pad…. I smothered the area with kapton tape and it's fine now.

I recently had this problem (again) and only managed to solve it by touching up the pins on the digitizer FPC with a soldering iron. I forget which pin it was, but it was the “even” row (along the edge of the board, not on the component side). I'm shocked that nobody mentioned this here. Now my seemingly ‘bad batch’ of 4 digitizers is working with the sleep/on/off button again.

you have a couple of options to choose from and considering you have opened the iPad Mini already to replace your part;

- did you alter the two lens assembly magnets in anyway? (located top right and bottom right on device, usually attached to factory lens assembly)

- make sure they have kapton tape covering them (or the original tape that covers said magnets)

- go to settings: tweak the lock screen options, you may have to just swallow the bullet and turn it to off, but when you put a magnetized iPad cover on, it will not lock as it should.

I've a bit that power button flex replacement parts tend to be lackluster quality as far as Apple products go.

good luck,

guy who works on iPads alot.
