Background and Identification
The Lincoln Town Car is a line of full-size luxury sedans that was produced by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company, an American automaker. Lincoln marketed the Town Car from 1981 to 2011 and served as the flagship sedan of Ford Motor Company. The Lincoln Town Car derived its name from a limousine body style and many of these models were used for fleet and livery (limousine) service. From 1983 to 2011 (when it was discontinued), the Town Car was Ford’s longest-produced car worldwide and was the longest mass-produced car sold in North America.
The first-generation Lincoln Town Car was introduced in 1980 for the 1981 model year. The Town Car consolidated Lincoln’s Continental and Continental Town Car into a single model line. The Lincoln Town Car was offered as a two-door and four-door sedan as the Town Coupe nameplate was discontinued. The Town Car two-door model was discontinued for 1982 and in 1984, Lincoln reduced its full-size automobile line down to only the Town Car four-door sedan.
All Lincoln Town Car models include a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and classify as full-size luxury cars. At its introduction in 1980, the Lincoln Town Car was offered in two trim levels, a standard (base) trim and a Lincoln Town Car Signature Series. In 1982, Lincoln adopted the Cartier Edition trim, which remained part of the Town Car line until 2003. Town Car special editions included the Cartier Designer Edition, Sail America Commemorative Edition, Special Edition, and Gucci Edition.
Lincoln Town Cars include the Lincoln emblem (called the Lincoln Star), which is a four-point star inside of an elongated rectangle. Town Cars also include the name “Town Car” in cursive font or capital letters.
