Samsungのフラグシップスマートフォン、Galaxy S8。2017年4月発売。

No sound coming from speaker

I've dragged my old S8 out of retirement to fill in while my current phone is being repaired. Trouble is, I'm not getting any sound from the speaker. Oddly, I can talk on the phone OK but it doesn't ring nor vibrate, so I have no idea if a call is coming in.

The lack of sound applies to app, including YouTube, That doesn't bother me too much, but missing calls and other notifications does. I can hear sound through headphones but I refuse to wear them continuously.

I've tried another speaker module (this is a bit of a frankenphone, repaired from a couple different S8s) but no luck either. This phone's speaker was working before I replaced the screen so I suspect that something isn't plugged in property, but after going through the various guides, I can't see what it could be. The guides just show the speaker module being put in place and screwed down.

Any ideas?

Since you've already tried another speaker, I'd check the contacts before replacing anything else. Make sure the speaker assembly sits flat, the contact pads are clean, and all three screws are installed properly. If that checks out, I'd look at the charging port board and its connection to the motherboard next. Also check whether the phone is in Mute or Do Not Disturb mode, since that could explain the missing calls and notifications.

The problem ultimately lies in the ability of the speaker module to make contact with the circuit board. This apparently relies on precise fit of all the components. The speaker module is held in by 3 screws at the bottom of the phone while the contacts are at the top end of the module.

The circuit board the module needs to make contact with also has other connectors on it that are about the same height as the speaker contacts. It doesn't take much for the contacts to not be made. You can test this by pressing down on the top end of the speaker module. Ideally it shouldn't move but try as I might, I couldn't get it to sit perfectly flat no matter how many times I tried reassembling that area.

In the end, I put a folded piece of double-sided tape over the outside top end of the speaker module. When the phone's back cover in in place, this presses down on the speaker module so the contact is made.
