Get the vehicle's ODBII port scanned with a scantool, to see if they're are any DTC (Diagnostic Troubleshooting codes) codes being shown.
A check engine light is just that - a warning light to check the engine as something is wrong. Getting the port scanned is the quickest way to find out what's happening with the engine.
Larger retail auto parts stores in the USA e.g. AutoZone, PepBoys, O'Reilley's etc will do this for free apparently.
