Buttons acting like a crusty Xbox 360 controller

The pause/play, volume up, and volume down buttons are suddenly sticking, unresponsive, and feel like an old Xbox controller that’s never been cleaned. I have taken good care of these headphones and kept the buttons clean and free of dented. What could be the issue?
