Trackpad Randomly Stops Working
I have a Dell XPS 15 that is roughly 3 years old. The trackpad has recently entered periods where it will not work for several days. I have reinstalled the mouse drivers, and this did not fix anything. An external mouse works just fine. The computer has also been waking up from sleep mode which makes me wonder if the mouse is somehow sending signals even when it is not being activated. Since this issue has come and gone a couple of times in the past few weeks, I'm trying to decide whether this is a hardware or a software issue. Should I just replace the trackpad altogehter? Or is there a potential fix I can try first? Thank you so much!
@danj --- Would you mind taking a look at this? TYSM!

@teardowns101 - I'm not very familiar with Dell's, but from your comments I would think the trackpad has been damaged from a liquid spill where the liquid wicked into the sensors layers creating interference.

No liquid spilled on this laptop as far as I am aware.... Thanks for your time though!

@teardown-er It might be worth inspecting the batteries closely. If the battery is expanding and contracting, that could be interfering with the trackpad’s performance. Swelling batteries can put pressure on internal components and cause intermittent failures. While you’re at it, check if there’s a BIOS update available—sometimes firmware fixes can resolve hardware-related issues like this.
