How do you remove the carousel bottom?

The pin came out of 1 of the horses at the bottom to make it go up and down and now it won't turn as the horse is in the down position. How do you remove the carousel bottom to put the pin back into the plastic shaft piece of the horse? Do I need to take off the top to get to the bottom or can I just remove the screws on the bottom to get to it? Don't want to try something that looks simple and find I need to take the whole thing apart to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.
