Ac repairs are not DIY friendly due to most diyers unfamiliar with vehicle refrigeration repairs encompassing; tools and equipment needed for correct, safe, removal of refrigerant, determiing what parts need replacing, flushing the system of oil and contaminants if sealer was ever used, replacing oil, replacing old valve cores in both service valves, using new seals everywhere to ensure against leaks from a pressurized system whether operating or not, evacuating a repaired system, final leak test in a vacuum before refilling with new refrigerant. Diyers familiar with ac repairs will use refrigeration gauges to assess system refrigeration capacity in determining whether a leak or compressor damage occurred. As a rule, diyers are not equipped or skilled in repairing ac compressors other than replacing a blown clutch coil along wth new idler pulley and clutch plate. Compressors are replaced in its entirety.
