Replacing M2 Screen: Pro Lid Angle Sensor and True Tone

Hi, thanks in advance.

I’ve been reading online, but I’m still not sure about one thing:

When replacing the screen on an M2 MacBook, do you also need to replace the Lid Angle Sensor, or is there a way to calibrate it instead?

Also, is True Tone completely unrecoverable after a screen replacement?

Thanks again!

The source of the part is the issue with display replacements:

  • A virgin display from the back of the factory won’t have its firmware installed as Apple does this at the point of system assembly, so it won’t have a working camera.
  • A used display will have the firmware, but TrueTone won’t work (at least that is what we have seen with the M1 models).
  • Getting the display from Apple gets you access to the paywalled calibration tool so all of the system is calibrated.

As far as the angle sensor reusing it when you replace the display is not an issue. If you are replacing it as it was damaged we hit the same issues like I expressed with the display.

Now here’s an interesting tidbit I haven’t verified yet! Let’s say you get a used display and you ordered a replacement angel sensor from Apple at that point you’ll gain access to the calibration tool, I was told the display will be recalibrated with the new sensor at which point regaining TrueTone. If you do this let us know! As that would be a way around Apples lockout.

So here’s the self repair site to order the needed parts, first referencing the online service manuals also linked within the site Apple Self Repair Store

Hello, great idea.

How can I verify if True Tone works or not?

@mirkounchained - within the display settings Use True Tone on Mac if the setting is missing then you’ll need to try the angle sensor trick!

I am going through the same issue. Did truetone work after doing the calibration just for the lid angle sensor? Truly appreciate any insight on this

FYI an Update, it does not work. I bought a new lid angle sensor through apple self service and they did the calibration online. It only calibrated the lid angle sensor. True tone remains disabled. %#*@ you apple!

@kesharawee63231 - Bummer! I had a feeling it might not work.
