MacBook Pro Charges When Off, But Not When On

Hello everyone,

I’m facing an issue with my MacBook Pro. When it's switched off, it charges while the battery is connected. However, when it’s powered on, the charging stops after a few seconds.

Another strange thing is that when I disconnect the battery and plug in the charger, the MacBook Pro turns on and runs without any issues.

I’ve already tried using a different OEM charger, but no luck. I even swapped the charging port, but the problem persists.

Has anyone else experienced this issue before?

Thank you! :)

Battery disconnected and charger connected. MBP running

What is CoconutBattery telling you? I can’t see the logic doing this if the system is fully working as designed. Testing without the battery won’t be a valid test.

Coconut battery showing battery is normal even i replace it with a different battery both battery is in good condition.

When the battery is connected system work flawlessly but if i try to connect the charger it charge for few seconds then stop charging. amber light on the charger turn off no more indication.

if i shut off the mac and connect the charger it will charge without any issue.

@itsmeapple "I’ve already tried using a different OEM charger" what charger did you try and what charger do you have right now? After you changed the port, did you checked the voltage and amperage on your magsafe board connector to see what was the amperage draw from your power supply?

さんによる

@itsmeapple - Can you please post a set of snaps of CoconutBatteries main window with the charger plugged in after you’ve allowed the Battery to discharge a bit (charger not connected) let’s say about 80%. Then plug in the charger and take a second snap after waiting a few minutes so Coconut has had a chance to be refreshed. Let it charge as you would with the system is running or just with the display turned off (with the charger still connected) now take a third snap around 30 minutes after the last. Now shut the system down let it charge up and restart the system and take the last snap. Make sure to label each snap so,we don’t get confused.

@itsmeapple - I do wonder if the battery is good, if you look through the snaps the batteries temp does look a bit high during charging and SMC will lower the power as well as shut down the charging until the battery cools down.

I would inspect the MagSafe port making sure the contacts are clean as well as the hollow as junk can mess up the connection. The middle pin is the one-wire comm connection which maybe failing to connect. You might want to replace the MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2015) MagSafe 2 DC-In Board sometimes the insulator warps so the connection is not firm. If the MagSafe plug seams a bit warm when the MagSafe LED goes out that’s a good clue.

Replace a broken or damaged MagSafe 2 DC-in board for your Late 2013 to Mid 2015 MacBook Pro 15" Retina laptop with this part. This part connects the wall adapter power to the logic board.の画像

Hi @danj Quick question:

1) If the DC-In board cuts off the charging, will it affect the charger itself? I’m asking because whenever my MacBook stops charging, I have to unplug the charger from the main power outlet and reconnect it for the charger to work again.

2) Also why is this happening only when the MBP is running? if it is shut down it continue to charge without any issue.

@itsmeapple - If the one-wire comm link is lost then the charger doesn’t know what to do, so it’s reasonable for the charger to shutdown. Sadly, different makers of chargers did different things so I can’t say for sure if yours is working correctly or not.

While from the outside a real Apple unit will look like the others, the internals can be very different. In fact one of my employers workers forgot theirs and grabbed one at a local shop. Plugged in his laptop went to dinner only to find his hotel room a smoky mess and the company was sued for 2 million by the hotel! As the charger was the cause of the fire.

@danj I got you.

Here is the update of what i did so far. Removed the old DC-In Board and put a new one and now the charger is on and off kinda looping. I've add a video to my main question you can see it in action if you get a time.

Thank you.

@itsmeapple - Sorry, the vid is not playable for me the iFixit server has issues with some vids.
