Does anyone know what causes or how to fix the mouse button double clicking? It is as if when ever I am trying to either press and release or press and hold the button down that it randomly releases and presses again, making single clicks like double clicks and messing up any dragging action.

So I followed the guide on how to replace the mouse wheel just to know how to take the mouse apart. I cleaned the mouse very very thoroughly and that fixed both my sluggish mouse wheel and also my double-clicking problem! :)

I had that exact problem too, and I fixed it by opening the mouse, noting the model number of the switch inside and ordering a bag of a handful of those switches, then soldering one of the new ones in. That was about five years ago and the button has yet to do anything weird again, even though the switches I bought were cheap knock-offs.

This issue is very common across all mouse devices. The cause is the Omron micro switch. Especially nowdays, when they are produced in china. Older Omron switches, made in Japan were much reliable. With novice soldering skills the switch can be replaced, but with enough dexterity they can be fixed by removing the cap and cleaning the contact surfaces. All versions are temporary solutions, the double click issue will return with time.
