Battery not recognised but works unplugged.

Model: A2289 - MacBook Pro 13" Two Thunderbolt Ports 2020

Cycles: 5

Recently replaced battery with an iFixit one.

The system no longer recognises the battery (and coconutBattery shows NaN SoC), and sleeps when unplugged.

Tried SMC reset, PRAM/NVRAM reset, nothing. Assumed another battery failure.

Then tried disabling sleep entirely with the command

sudo pmset disablesleep 1

and now the MacBook runs perfectly fine on battery power, but the system still doesn't recognise the battery.

Has anyone encountered this issue before, or does anyone have suggestions on what else I can try?

Beginning at Step 9 of this guide you can see the battery data cable. Make sure that this was transferred over from the original battery to the replacement battery correctly. If this cable isn't properly installed the system will not recognize the battery properly. If you're certain that the battery data cable and the rest of the battery is installed correctly, then I would operate under the assumption that the battery you installed is faulty. Good luck!

I just finished a battery replacement on an A1466 MacBook Air and ran into the same problem. Turned out the fix was as easy as opening it back up and reseating the battery connector; on the Air it's a single plug so it's not a one-to-one comparison, but essentially I just hadn't gotten it plugged in fully.

Once the plug was in all the way, everything started working like it should.
