Display not detecting Mac mini

I have a Mac mini m2 and it works fine with the display but the display randomly stopped detecting the mac and says connection not detected.

I have tried:

  • Different monitors
  • Different cables (I’m using hdmi to hdmi)
  • Tried rebooting in safe mode, the screen starts displaying in recovery mode on all of the displays but the moment I select my hard disk to reboot in safe mode, the screen goes blank and connection is lost
  • Disconnecting mouse and keyboard before starting the Mac
  • Double checking that cables are secure and powered on correctly
  • I’ve been on with apple support for tedious amounts of text and calls and nothing helped.

If anyone can please help it’ll be very much appreciated

This sounds like a monitor setting issue. If we look at EveryMac M2 specs

This model supports "up to two displays" -- one "up to" 6016x3384 (6K) resolution at 60 Hz over Thunderbolt and one display with "up to" 5120x2880 (5K) resolution at 60 Hz over Thunderbolt or 3840x2160 (4K) resolution at 60 Hz over HDMI.

So here’s the possible display support. Review the displays or TV’s frequency support as it’s likely the display can’t support the higher resolution the Mac Mini is trying to drive it. The reason it starts off working and as soon as you select the drive the OS’s setting take over.

  • 3840x2160 (4K)
  • 5120x2880 (5K)
  • 6016x3384 (6K)

Okay but how do I go about changing the resolution without being able to access the mac at all

@zainab63458 - What is your displays ability? Within its settings you should be able to see what its offering as you need to know that first. Some offer Auto Sense Vs Manual could the setting have been altered to Manual?

I’m using a Samsung smart tv and it’s manual says it specifically supports Mac resolutions of 640 x 480, 832 x 624, 1152 x 870, i don’t think we altered the settings on the tv and it worked fine before so I don’t think they’ve been set to manual, the tv did give instructions to set picture quality once we plugged in the Mac and we tried it but it didn’t change anything

@zainab63458 - All of these options are less than what the system can support as such the system needs to dial back the frequency to match these lesser scan rates.

Do you have access to a 4k (at least) display just so you can manually set it within the systems display settings?

Thanks a lot for your help, I tried a bunch of things out and in the end I ended up reinstalling the macOS from recovery mode and it finally booted up, I’m not sure what went wrong but I know it was something with the resolution. Thank you once again.
